The vehicle behind her had flashing lights and appeared to be a police cruiser. Without giving it so much as a second thought, the woman pulled her car over to the side of the highway. The highway was dark as it had no lights and there were very few motorists who were out driving late at that hour of night. When the woman pulled her car over, a man got out of the vehicle that was parked behind her and approached her window on the driver's side of the vehicle. Before she could even react, the man pulled out a knife and stabbed the woman repeatedly through her open window. Her raped and mangled body wasn't discovered until days later. Some time after that, this same man tried the same thing with a different woman. Thee woman was driving late at night, having come off of a job in which she had to work a night shift. Unknown to the predator, this woman had heard about the tragedy that had befallen the other female before her. When she saw the flashing lights behind her, she decided to temporarily ignore them and instead, she drove several miles down the highway and exited the highway, turning into a well-lit gas station. As soon as she turned into the gas station, she watched as the car that had been behind her drove past her car instead of stopping. When she looked after the vehicle, she noticed that it wasn't even a police car! She immediately wrote down the license plate number of the car and went inside of the gas station to tell an attendant what had happened. The situation above is not all that uncommon. There have been countless times when women and other helpless victims have fallen prey to criminals w who purposely wanted to hurt them. In fact, now, if you are pulled over on the highway or on a road by a police officer, you are well within your rights to not stop your car or come to a complete stop until you find a well lit shelter in which to pull over. What this means is that if you have to drive for several miles down the road or several feet until you find a lighted area, a police officer cannot penalize you for doing so. The next time you are pulled over by a police officer, know that you are within your rights to make sure that your safety comes first. What happened to those women in the past is not something that has to be. Regardless of whether or not you are a woman or a man, if you are traveling at night, familiarize yourself with the area ahead of time and know where the various rest stops are (at least an approximation), this way you will always be prepared should something happen.
