Quality Assurance For Structural Design And Structural Drawings

By: Richard B. Home | Business

Structural design and analysis is the key to any building construction project. It is therefore important to pay careful attention to the Quality assurance processes associated with design, planning and drawing stages. The quality check process can be applied to various sections of your project such as schematic design, design development, shop drawings and contract documents. The process examines factors like design criteria and standards, local building codes, load calculations, seismic design inspection and other special considerations.

It is important to establish and maintain design standards and verify that all the design is carried out in compliance with industry standards. The quality check process include following tasks:
# Set up and maintain drafting/drawing standards
# Perform quality assurance reviews on all design/drawing work
# Approve design details before sending them to the CAD division

The main objective of quality check review is to provide recommendations based on the examination of experts. The shop drawings are reviewed to find errors, detect clash and omissions. Medium to large construction firms use multiple review system while small firms use interim review system to catch mistakes early and correct them immediately. Quality check program assures that the structure is rightly designed, is effectively framed and is feasible from construction point of view.

Another objective of this review is to check whether the contract documents are accurate, detail-oriented, correct and coordinated with other trades. This helps in reducing RFIs and change orders, improving efficiency and saving time and money.

Some of the techniques used during Quality check process include:
# Visualize long term benefits
# Envision end product
# Validate load calculations
# Check accuracy as per standards
# Check for framing sizes
# Check connection details
# Check for interference (clash detection)
# Find omissions
# Verify Shop drawings for constructability
# Verify that the structural drawings align with other trades such as architectural, mechanical and plumbing drawings.
