On a recent trip to Cancun I rented a boat called the Querida del Mar. We started the day by boarding the Cancun fishing charter at the marina where the captain and deck hand had already loaded plenty of ice, soft drinks, beer, and fresh limes, tomatoes and onions and chiles. I inquired why the â€vegetables††The captain responded †When we catch a good fish we will make ceviche †raw fish cooked in lime juice with chopped tomatoes, onion, and Serrano chiles and fresh cilantro or coriander.†Thumbs up sounds like a plan to me. So off we go on our great Cancun fishing charter. Cancun fishing in case you did not know if world famous. So if you are going to be in the Cancun and Riviera Maya area I strongly recommend that you consider a Cancun fishing excursion. From my experience you will not be disappointed. If you have read any Cancun fishing reports, or Cancun fishing reviews you will see what I mean. Most reports about Cancun fishing tours, report how great the fishing is. So after about an hour of travel time we arrived at the grounds for fishing in Cancun Mexico. Deep sea fishing in Cancun Mexico generally begins the day with trolling. Once you have trolled for most of the day the captain usually ends your Cancun fishing charter by pulling up on top of the reef and letting you fish for Grouper and Snapper which are great for eating. You can even take the fish back your all inclusive Cancun hotel and they will generally fix them for you †or you can give them a tip if they are hesitant. So we began trolling and we caught plenty of Bonito or little tuna which we reserved for bait to use in the afternoon once we began our bottom fishing. Then we caught Rainbow runners, and finally a 15 lb. Barracuda. Then we caught a Black Fin tuna †kin to the famous Blue Fin and Yellow Fin tuna. After 4 hours of almost nonstop action of trolling we decided to take a break and look for a good coral head to see what was on the bottom. We used a downrigger to get the bait down to the bottom and then the reel exploded. After a good 15 minute fight we brought up a 50 lb. Wahoo. What a great surprise to me. I have been fishing most of my life and caught my first Wahoo †the fastest swimming fish in the sea †at age 17. But never have I caught a Wahoo while bottom fishing. Other fishermen tell me they have caught Wahoo on the bottom, but personally I have never done that. No sooner than we boated the Wahoo and â€bam†another Wahoo. Wahoo are hard to catch because as they are the fastest fish in the sea they swim directly at you and then spit the hook and say good-bye. Fortunately for us this day we boated them both. So now imagine how I felt. Sitting on the back of the Querida del Mar, eating fresh Barracuda Ceviche and Black Fin Sashimi †wish I had my Wasabi paste. All in all A great day of fishing in Cancun Mexico.
