Radar Detector

By: Charles Lamston Home | Communications

For those of you that have no idea what a radar detector is, it is an electronic device that is used by drivers to determine if the speed at which their vehicle is traveling is being watched by a radar unit. This is made possible by police officers bouncing a certain type of radio wave off a vehicle that is traveling at any speed, using a radar gun; they are able to see the speed at which the vehicle is traveling. These are useful devices, and what you need to remember is that under no circumstances should they be interfered with by GPS detectors as this may cause major complications.

But as days go by and technology advances, people are no longer using the devices that are operated by radio waves but are using ones that operate more easily. The new speed detection devices are known as pulsed laser lights or LIDAR. It is said that the LIDAR speed detection device is not as effective as the radar detector that operates using radio waves. This is because the output beam of the device is very accurate and focused. Another reason why radio waves beat LIDAR is because with LIDAR the beam can only go as far as 6 feet where as the radio waves can stretch to over 85 feet. Another important fact is that when a police officer wants to see the speed of the moving vehicle they are going to point the beam in the front of the car, at the headlights and because the radar detectors are built on the windshield of the car, which is away from the beams aim, sometimes the device will not show a reading at all.

The radar detector was a very clever design and who knows, maybe it can help prevent motor vehicle accidents and hopefully save the lives of millions of innocent people.
