Ready To Go Online Businesses: Worth The Money?

By: Peggy Sherman Home | Business

The Internet is a great venue for entrepreneurial business people. Online businesses can be born without major investors, partners, or significant overhead.

It is true that thousands of now well established online businesses had very modest beginnings. And, many folks are earning hundreds of thousands of dollars a year working from a home office equipped only with a computer and a telephone.

But, I don't know anyone who has bought a "ready to go" online business and enjoyed success. Ads touting ready to go internet businesses are now everywhere because of the money they make for the folks who sell them. Here's why they are normally not a good deal for those who buy them.

1. Anybody can sell you a website template with attractive looking electronic equipment pictured on it, but, do you really think anyone is going to visit your site and buy a $1,200 computer or TV from you without knowing who you are?

2. You can have a website hosted on the Internet in less time than it takes to microwave a frozen dinner. Getting people to find your site is a wholly different challenge. So, forget about putting up a site on Friday and walking away from your day job on Monday. It's just not happening.

3. Many products and services just don't sell well online. You need to know which ones do before you invest in a website.

4. If you have a website identical to dozens (or even thousands) of others, you will never achieve even moderately good search engine rankings. So, how will you get visitors to your site? You had better have a cost-effective method.

5. The ads for online business opportunity packages assure us that anyone can strike it rich by applying their proven formulas. In an economy in which automobile manufacturers, banks, brokerage houses, and major retailers are losing millions, do you trust advertisers who ask you to believe that any business is bullet proof?

You can be successful with an online business. But, you need a competively priced product or service people are willing to buy online, a well-conceived business plan, and a cost-effective way to get targeted visitors to your website. And, you must be willing to put in time and energy.

Making money online is not rocket science. But, it is something that requires more than a business in a box. Do not be fooled.
