Having spent a lot of time on research and writing your paper means that you are too close to even spot simple mistakes. Reading over work that you have already written can become confusing and especially if this is your undergraduate dissertation - substantially large research paper that you will be completing for the first time. You will be comfortable with your own style of writing and the tone and clarity of your work will be very familiar. This means that you won't notice little mistakes that could disrupt the flow of reading. Choosing a proofreader to review your academic paper can be a difficult task. You will want to ensure they have experience in your field of study, as this will be vital when suggesting improvements in your written ability. You will also want to ensure the proofreader will edit and proofread your work for consistency as well as the usual spelling and grammar errors. Adding comments about the tone of your paper should also be requested, as these will help you improve your paper before submission. Having your document edited does not mean that the editor will write your document for you, or change huge chunks of your writing, rather, they will adapt your sentences to be grammatically correct and influence consistency in your work.
