We’ve all been there that one summer or winter. It was either unusually hot or unusually cold, especially as of late. As bizarre as it is, once you took a look at your utility bill, you might have been outraged because you’d never paid that much in your life! Or perhaps you were expecting it with all the extra energy you needed in order to stay warm or cool. Or perhaps you have little ones or are taking care of your mom or dad and they needed a little bit of extra heat to keep them warm or for it to be a little bit cooler. Either way, you’re probably looking for ways to save on your electricity bill. Here are a few ways to reduce utility bills, simply and quickly. First of all, if it’s cold outside and you live in a drafty house, try and block off the drafty spots such as under the doors or under the windows. If you have a cracked window, cover it with thick plastic and tape it in place. Make sure that there aren’t any bubbles in the tape and that it lies completely flat. Add another layer that slightly overlaps to prevent any further leaks. This will help to further secure the tape and allow you to retain more heat than if you left those drafts open. In the summer, turn off your air conditioner at night and leave the windows open. This is not only energy efficient but it’s also healthy for you: most homes now are very well sealed. This makes them very energy efficient, but it also reduces the amount of oxygen in the house. By airing your home out, you allow the breeze to help cool your house and also keep yourself and your family a lot safer than they would be otherwise. However, make sure to use screens to help keep out creepy crawlies. (As for the airing out, it’s also wise to do it once or twice a week during the winter, if you can manage it. If it is too cold, you can try it one room at a time for a few hours a day until the whole house is done.) However, there is another method to reduce your utility bills that you may not have considered. It’s something that quite a few people haven’t considered. It’s as simple as this: When you’re using all of the electricity that comes into your home, you’re pretty much paying for what you get. However, in a lot of homes, you aren’t using all of that electricity. It gets â€lost†so to speak. When this happens, your utility bills slowly increase. However, there are certain systems that take the electricity that you are losing (which is potentially about 30% in some homes) and stores it until you need it. It’s kind of like a little electricity bank. It not only helps you to reduce utility bills, but it saves the electricity. That way, you don’t have to pull in quite as much electricity and therefore save a bundle!
