Regional Lymph Nodes And Esophageal Cancer

By: David Hensely Home | Health-and-Fitness | Diseases-and-Conditions

Esophageal cancer can lead to various problems as they spread to nearby or distant parts of the esophagus. Cancer staging determines the growth of esophageal cancer and its spread. Stating is very vital to decide on the type of treatment provided to every individual patient.

There are many ways by which cancer can spread all over the body and can lead to disruption of organs and their functioning. Esophageal cancer can spread via normal chest structures by local extension into the adjacent structures. It can include the diaphragm, trachea, arteries and even inside bigger veins that emanates from heart. Even though almost all kinds of cancer spread through local extensions, esophageal cancer spreads faster and extensively even before it is diagnosed. This is the reason for the cause of various esophageal cancer symptoms including difficulties in bleeding, cough, fatigue, weight loss and swallowing.

Regional lymph nodes are also responsible for the spreading of esophageal caner as the lymphatic circulation system is said to be a very complete system or circulation of the body resembling t he blood circulatory system which drains inside different lymph nodes. Cancerous cells of esophageal cancer access the lymphatic circulation and tragel to the lymph nodes for beginning new cancer sites. This is known as lymphatic spread. The interior esophagus walls has extensive lymphatic channel networks that most of the patients suffering from esophageal cancer would have their regional lymph nodes too involved with it.

First, cancerous esophageal cells spread from the esophagus’s sides called peri esophageal lymph nodes and then spreads into the mediastinal lymph nodes or in the mid region of chest and t hen into the region above collar bones near neck called the supraclavicular lymph nodes or into celiac and peri gastric lymph nodes or abdomen region based on the primary location of the esophageal cancer.

Apart from this esophageal cancer can even spread via bloodstream and get access to various organs situated in the distance. This is called as metastases. But the incidence of esophageal metastases to distant parts is remote as esophageal cancer does not travel that faster and to such distances.

The treatment plan for esophageal cancer mainly depends on two major factors. One being the person’s health and the other is the extent to which cancer is spread. During early stages it might not be spread deep inside the esophagus or to the lymph nodes that surgery might be very appropriate. But at the advanced stages, it might be difficult to treat for curing the disease but can be used for controlling it and the symptoms effectively.
