By: dus09 Home | Computers-and-Technology | Data Recovery

Sometimes, while trying to upgrade your current Windows operating system to a higher version, the system denies to install. You may encounter such a problem in the middle of the installation process because of any file system corruption, incompatible BIOS settings or bad media etc. The problem results in the inaccessibility of your valuable data in the hard drive. Under such a situation, in order to retrieve your files back, you need to look for any third-party file recovery utility.

Below are some of the error messages, which you may encounter while upgrading from Windows 2000 to XP:

â€Setup was unable to verify drive C:.
Your computer may not have enough memory to examine the drive, or your Windows XP CD may contain some corrupted files.
To continue, press Enter.â€

As per the above message, when you press the 'ENTER' key, you will receive another error message, which can be read as below:

â€Setup cannot access the CD containing the Windows XP installation files.â€

Form the above message, it is quite clear that the installation CD can not be detected or read by the OS anymore.

Causes:

Below are some of the probable reasons behind the problem:
The Windows XP setup disk may be damaged.
There is certain compatibility issue with the BIOS settings.
Possible file system corruption.
Incompatible motherboard.

Resolution:

Go through the below steps to locate the problem and perform the solution:

Check the Windows installation disc by running it on a different computer. If the CD is not running at that system too, the problem is there with the CD itself.
Check the consistency of the file system by booting the system in recovery console. Run the command 'chkdsk' to scan and rwpir the errors, if any.
Go to the 'Microsoft Windows Upgrade Advisor' inside the setup CD. There you can find out whether the current hardware supports Windows XP or not. If required, download and install needed system files, drivers and retry with the setup disc.

However, after carrying out all the above steps, if you are still unable to carry out the installation process, moreover, the problem occurred in the middle of the installation couldn't be resolved, you need to use any efficient file recovery software to retrieve back the inaccessible files from the system. These file recovery utilities are powerful enough to recover the lost, deleted or inaccessible files back from the media irrespective of the data loss problem.
