Maternity clothes retailers noticed in April and May of this year that there was an increase in the number of women buying maternity wear. It is now expected that Britain is about to bear witness to a baby boom which may also see sales of breastfeeding tops and nursing clothes soaring. According to an article in The Express, this rising number of women buying maternity wear may actually stem to the big freeze at the beginning of this year when more and more couples were snowed in. The article also claims the economic recession may have led to more couples choosing to stay in for cosy nights rather than heading out on the town. Other experts also think that the competitive jobs market may also have encouraged more women to swap their skinny jeans for maternity clothes as they find it more difficult to get on the career ladder. Now midwives up and down the country are bracing themselves for a bumper number of babies due to be born over the next month. In Portsmouth alone, the number of expected babies has risen by 20 per cent compared to the same time last year as over 600 are now expected in September alone. Speaking to The Express, Portsmouth based midwife Joy Horner revealed the snow may well have paid a part in the expected baby boom. She said: †We do see a rise in conception rates when there’s been severe weather. â€The snow could definitely be the reason for the baby boom next month as if you cannot get out of your house, you’ve got to find some way to keep occupied.†A baby boom is often worked out by looking at the number of women coming in for their 12 week scans.
