Rubber Bellows †Their Types, Uses And Advantages

By: BraydenBaker Home | Business

Rubber Bellows act as extension joints of rotating gears like pump, pipe works and chillers. They are highly flexible and hence fit easily to complete some misaligned installation allowing lateral, axial and angular movement. This is very similar to metal extension joints. These Bellows are also thin walled which isolates noise and vibration to the optimum. Rubber Bellows are extensively used in Fluid Filling System, Chemical Plants, Hydraulic Ram Protections and adjustments in the Duct line.

Rubber being an unrefined compound has a limited life. External forces like temperature, ozone, ultraviolet light etc. hampers the bellows a lot. With these influences at work, the Bellows change their shape under high temperature and pressure. To reduce the expansion of the Bellows, the pipe works must be anchored.

Components and Features of Rubber Bellows

The Rubber Bellows are manufactured from Rubberised Canvas, Rubber, Rubberised Synthetic Fibres and many stiffeners to strengthen it to resist pressure. Even the rubber-molded Bellows are at times made of various types of Polymers, like Silicone, Neoprene etc. The Bellows can be compressed into many shapes like round, square and rectangle, depending upon the length desired. Capable of being in use in alkaline and acidic settings, Rubber Bellows can endure up to a temperature of 250 degree C.

Types of Rubber Bellows

There are two types of rubber bellows - single arch and double arch Expansion Bellows.

Single arch extension bellows: These are made to absorb thermal growth, and survive under a pressure up to 40 bar in a temperature as high as 600 degree C. These are employed in exhaust connectors of vehicles, heating and ventilating systems, nuclear fusions and etc. Its features are:

€Absorbs vibration and shock
€Removes Stresses of contraction and expansion
€Reduces line noise
€Recompense for axial, lateral, torsional and angular misalignment
€Stops fracture and bucking in pipes

Double arch extension bellows: These are built with Elastomer Neoprene with these features:

€Design molded for improved quality up to size 10" NB"
€Higher pressure
€Superior movement- nearly double of single arch.
€Absorb and cut off noise, vibration and shock.
€Absorb stress or pipe movement.
€Positive sealing granted by flanges
€Compensates for offset or misalignment

Having these information’s, you are now ready to make your choice for the rubber bellows as per your requirements.

Uses and Advantages of Rubber Bellows and Expansion Joints

Rubber Bellows are used to thwart entry of metallic chips and dust particles into the core of some equipment, offering protection from problems like corrosion, noise, vibration, stress and abrasion. These are often custom built according to the requirements of the customers to save from oil, acids, grease, pressure, bleaches and spatter. These Bellows are used in:

€Heating and Ventilating System
€Air-conditioning
€Water Treatment Plants
€Central & Ancillary Power - Generating Stations
€Process Piping
€Sewage Disposal

The advantages of the Rubber Extension Bellows are:

€Decreases vibration
€Lightweight
€Lessened heat loss
€Diminished sound transmission
€Balance axial, lateral, torsional and angular movements
€Low forces of movement needed
€Fatigue factor reduced
€Resistant to corrosion and erosion
€Gasket free
€Nominal face-to-face dimensions
