The world is currently passing through a crisis. It is facing serious threats from international terrorism, natural disasters including earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions, economic meltdown, ethnic conflicts, and the threat of cancer and AIDS. But it seems that the biggest challenge comes from global warming and the disappearance of the ozone layer because of green house gas emissions. And over the last couple of years, this has become the biggest threat to life on Earth. Alternative fuels can help us a lot here in reducing our carbon emissions, often referred to as "green fuel," as it can give life back to the Mother Earth. Conventional And Non-Conventional Energy For Automobiles The term "alternative fuel" is usually used to refer to any nonconventional fuel that can be used to drive an automobile. Popularly, they are also referred to as "gas" in the United States and in many other countries. The conventional fuels include coal, propane, petroleum, diesel, natural gas, and in some cases even uranium. But most automobiles that you drive run on either petroleum or diesel. Some of the alternative fuels include bioalcohol (that includes ethanol, butanol, and methanol), natural gas, and methane that are non-fossil fuel in nature, hydrogen, electricity that has been chemically stored (such as fuel cells and batteries), biodiesel, oil from vegetables, and additional biomass sources. Apart from the environmental concern, there is another reason why it has become necessary to look for alternative sources of energy. The fact is, fossil fuels that are mined from the earth are quickly getting extinguished. According to estimates, in another 10 to 15 years, most of the fuel reserves will be gone and the day is not far away when we will not have any energy left to drive our automobiles unless we look at alternative fuels. Another concern is the uncertain political situation in the Middle East, where most of the fuel reserves are located. The rising demand for oil and the shortage in production often leads to increased prices, and this can lead to rising inflation and a negative impact on the economy. Political unrest naturally adds to this. Because of all these troubles, it makes sense to search for an alternative, and alternative fuels seem to be the right answer. The Rise In Popularity Of Alternative Sources Of Energy One positive development in recent years that has happened is that, there is today a growing understanding of the issues and the threats. There is, thus, an urgency to look for the alternatives. The problem is that most of the vehicles that are being manufactured today cannot run on such alternative sources. Thus, we need to first ensure that the automobile manufacturers are making such cars, trucks, SUV's, vans, and the other automobiles in adequate numbers. But this will of course depend on their demand among the consumers. Luckily now, the demand has picked up. According to estimates, as of 2009, there are more than 2.5 million automobiles in the United States alone that are running on alternative fuels. So before you are ready to switch over, you need to learn everything about green energy and how they can help you save your monthly bill and also the environment. Find out more why unleaded gas costs more, how the green vehicle can help you cut costs, and how those vehicles that do not run on alternative fuels pollute the environment.
