Saint Clement Of Rome A Short Biography

By: Beverly Johnson Home | Self-Improvement | Spirituality

Historians believe that Saint Clement I was appointed as the third pope by St. Peter himself. Saint Clement was born during the first century and became a leader of the Christian church. Not many other facts about Saint Clement are known. Saint Clement Epistles

Saint Clement of Rome wrote two epistles that survived through the ages: 1 Clement and 2 Clement. The first epistle is one of the most ancient Christian writings other than the New Testament. 1 Clement asserted the authority of the clergy in all church matters.

Some theologians believe 2 Clement was written by someone else but Saint Clement was given the credit. Saint Clement's second epistle addresses pagans that converted to Christianity saying, "We were maimed in our understanding - we were worshipping stones and pieces of wood, and gold and silver and copper - all of them made by humans".

Saint Clement Martyr

Emperor Trajan, also known as Marcus Ulpius Nerva Traianus, ruled Rome from 98 A.D. to 117 A.D. He imprisoned Saint Clement I for his Christian faith but Saint Clement continued to preach the words of Jesus Christ to other prisoners. Saint Clement of Rome was martyred when he was thrown into the Black Sea with an anchor tied to him. For this reason, Saint Clement is often depicted holding an anchor in his hand or tied to his neck.

Saint Clement Pictures

Because of the way Saint Clement died, he is often depicted in pictures with an anchor at his side or tied to his neck. Saint Clement jewelry always displays Saint Clement dressed as the pope with a large anchor in his hand and sailboats in the background.

Not only are Saint Clement medals and Saint Clement pendants popular religious jewelry but the St. Clement's Cross is also worn by many Christians. The St. Clement's cross is also known as the Mariner's Cross because it is an anchor in the shape of the cross.

Prayer of St. Clement

Lord, I want to do what you ask of me, In the way you ask, For as long as you ask, Because You ask it.

Let me love you, my Lord and my God, And see myself as I really am: A pilgrim in this world, A Christian called to respect and love All those whose lives I touch, Those in authority over me Or those under my authority, My friends and my enemies.

Help me conquer anger with gentleness, Greed by generosity, apathy by ferver. Help me to forget myself and reach out to others.

Teach me to realize that this world is passing, That my true future is the happiness of heaven, That life on earth is short, And the life to come eternal. Lead me safely through death To the endless joy of heaven.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
