Save Time With A Garage Door Opener

By: Arturo R Home | Home-and-Family | Home-Improvement

If your garage door does not already have an automatic opener, and you are forced to get out of the car to open your garage manually before going in, you may want to pay attention to the information in this article. Automatic garage door openers make it easier than ever to open your garage door, and it can be done from inside your car, the garage, or even inside the home. There are only a few factors that must be considered when choosing the right garage door opener to purchase.

Drive System: There are three different drive systems; screw-drive, chain-drive and computer-controlled drive. The screw-drive system uses a lifting mechanism which moves along a steel rod that is threaded. These units require the least amount of maintenance because of the small amount of moving parts, and they are very powerful devices. Generally the openers body is in the center of the garages ceiling. The chain-drive system operates using a metal chain which lifts the door up and down along a track. These systems are the most common, and typically are also the least expensive to purchase. The downside to these units is that they are generally louder than screw-drive units. Finally, the computer-controlled drive is the newest on the market, and uses no chains or screws. The units body sits directly above the garage door, and works well for garages with limited headroom because there is more open garage ceiling space.

Power: When choosing a garage door opener, look for one that has the necessary power in order to adequately lift your own garage door. You should be looking for at least a half horsepower with a double door. Even with a single door, a more powerful motor is always preferable.

Speed: Openers on the higher end of the market tend to operate a little more quickly than the others, which will reduce waiting time in the driveway. Models which open quickly still close slowly for the sake of safety.

Safety: There are features in all garage door openers that are meant to keep doors from crushing an object in their paths. If the doors strike something, they will reverse immediately. This tends to be controlled by electronic beams, which trigger the safety mechanism when penetrated by an object or a person.
