Scarsdale Diet

By: Diet Home | Health-and-Fitness

Developed in the 1970's and still hugely popular today the Scarsdale Medical Diet was created by Dr. Herman Tarnower. The

Scarsdale Diet is a highly regarded weight loss system that concentrates on low-calorie and low-carbohydrate meals and

beverages. This system basically comprises of two stages, the first of which covers 14 days of structured meals designed

specifically for weight loss, the second 14 day stage, the keep trim stage, is designed to reinforce the weight loss. Meals

in this weight-reduction plan are made up of 22.5 % of fats, 34.5 percent of carbohydrates, and 43 p.c of proteins.

During the diet phase, which lasts two weeks, your full menu is planned for you, substitutions are available however there

isn't much flexibility, this is where you lose the weight. Once complete the keep trim stage introduces some additional foods

and you're free to choose meals as you like as long as you stick to the allowed foods list.
Sugars are replaced with artificial sweeteners whilst teas and coffee must be de-caffeinated. Carbonated drinks must be diet

and no alcohol is permitted. Dressings and sauces that are allowed include mustard, vinegar, lemon, soy sauce, Worcestershire

sauce, seasonings and herbs. When cooking, non-stick vegetable spray must be used. Not all vegetables make it onto the diet

list and those to be excluded are all beans, peas, lentils, sweet corn and potatoes.

The diet is made up of lean protein, fruit and vegetables providing 850-1,000 calories per day. Examples of food include

roast chicken with spinach and green peppers followed by fruit salad. When on the Scarsdale Diet you should check your weight

every morning before you get dressed.

The Scarsdale Medical Diet works through a combination of low-carb and high-protein foods which result in ketosis, this is

why the diet phase is limited to just 14 days, additionally it's to prevent your body from becoming used to the diet.

Exercise is neither required nor recommended due to the low calorie intake. Food portions are not limited encouraging dieters

to stick with the plan.
