You have probably seen a black box at the back part of your air conditioner and this is called a scroll compressor. The term 'black box' is not a technical term because they just refer to the black casing. This machine is used to compress the refrigerant in the air conditioner; they are usually the replacement for piston compressors. They are smaller than the previous machines that came before them. When you see this AC compressor in the air conditioner in your home, you will see that there are two spirals. The first spiral is stationary while the second spiral is the one rotating around the stationary spiral that traps the refrigerant gas. The process of compression in this air conditioner compressor happens due to the quick reduction of the gas that sweeps refrigerant from the port on the inside to the outside. The scientific explanation is that kinetic energy is transformed to become potential energy. A specific kind of AC compressor is characterized by one of the two things: operation type or seal type. The choices that a user can choose from in the seal type are whether it is completely sealed, open type, and semi-sealed. On the other hand, the choices that one can choose from the operation type are either centrifugal, rotary, scroll, or piston. The good thing about each and every air conditioner compressor is that they are tested to know their different capabilities when it comes to different aspects like efficiency, pressure ration, maximum pressure ratio, mass flow rate, and even the rotational speed. This type of AC compressor was first discovered during the early 20th century but was developed into the current model that we are familiar of today only during the late 60's. Scroll compressors are known to have the ability to have a smaller outlet pressure and flow rate compared to piston or the compressors that are reciprocating. Even though piston compressors and scroll compressors are very similar to one another, the cooling system for a scroll compressor is much more complicated than the previous. However, a lot of people still prefer these scroll compressors over the piston because people feel that they are getting more benefits from them. But even with the numerous advantages that these scroll compressors bring to the users, the disadvantages are still undeniable. One of the various disadvantages of this type of compressor is that they are more prone to unwanted dirt just because suction valves are not present with them. Because they are more prone to dirt, they are also more susceptible to different problems caused by the dirt they accumulate in their system. With all the important information given about scroll compressors, the choice is still up to you if you think that you will feel much more comfortable using a scroll compressor over a piston compressor or vice versa. Of course, both of these and all the other types have their own advantages and disadvantages that is why it is just up to you to decide which of these weigh more for you.
