Term deposits are different from the demand deposits. As the name itself suggests, the term deposits are about keeping the deposits for some specific term in the banks or with some institutions. These are the deposits which are usually not required to be taken out before the maturity period. Therefore, only those sums are deposited in term deposits which are not required in the near future. The demand deposits, on the other hand, are the ones which can be taken out by the people as per their requirements anytime on demand from the banks. The interest rates on the term deposits are usually higher than that of the demand deposits to encourage people to keep the money in these instruments. The term deposits are the investment avenues. These are considered to be the safest of all the investment avenues and assure the guaranteed return on the investments. The interest rates on these deposits are usually fixed and the people are given the fixed sums either periodically or after the maturity period. There is however a difference between the rates offered by different banking or financial institutions. Therefore, the best interest rates on term deposits need to be compared for all these institutions. The rates are guided by the rates provided by the central banks of these countries but usually a free hand is given to the banks or institutes for determining their own interest rates. If there is a need to fund the long term development projects, and the banks require funds from the public for the same for some longer duration, it can offer slightly higher interest rates to encourage more term deposits from the public. It is not just for the long term development projects but also for investments in the other financial instruments or portfolios for which the banks may be requiring the term deposits. Based on the assessment of their own returns, they can offer you the assured and the best interest rates term deposit. So, does that mean that investments shall be done in any financial institution which can offer you the best interest rates on term deposits? Generally, this is the most obvious route taken by the people but the same shall be treaded with some degree of caution. Whether it is the fixed term deposits for large sums or for smaller amounts, the bank or the financial institution has to be reputed and broad based. Extremely attractive Interest rates, which defy reason and are higher than what most others are offering shall be considered with due caution. Since these are risk-free avenues of investments but also offer lower returns, the same shall be considered in comparison with the other investment options and your ability to take the risks for higher returns. Usually, the portfolio managers try to first safeguard and secure fixed returns for you in future and therefore, the term deposits are their first option. And, you shall not forget to factor in the element of inflation as well.
