Selecting New Pickups For Your Electric Guitar

By: Kyle Zoltowski Home | Arts-and-Entertainment | Music

The high-pitched and colorful pitch of electric guitars was the most important creation for rock and roll. During the 50's, this type of music was being experimented with and then in the 60's and 70's, that style was added to until it lead the way to the most popular music of all time. The amazing sound that comes out of an electric guitar is simply beautiful. It is amazing to imagine where music would have ended up if it hadn't been for the improvement upon the electric guitar; a scary thought. A band without an electric guitar is like a baby without its parents.

Electric guitars come in different forms, sizes, colors, and designs. Some people have the belief that it does not make a difference what electric guitar that is used because they all are the same thing. This is simply not true; brand, size, pickups, and neck all make a difference in the sound that spews from the guitar. Because of this, certain brands of electric guitars are seen and played for decades because of the perfection in sound. But, the most important part to the sound made is the pickups.

Whether starting a brand new band, jamming solo, or adding some weapons to your band’s existing stock, you should become aware of the different kinds of pickups on electric guitars before you go out and purchase one. Many stores will allow you to try them and can be very helpful in including information that will lead one in buying the most suitable electric guitar. Make sure to get an explanation about the various pickup arrangements. Thestyles of pickups for electric guitars are:

* Single Coil Pickups †This type of pickup has only one coil or wire. This type is the oldest of electric guitar arrangements. When jamming with a guitar that has a single coil pickup, the sound is drowned by other frequencies in the air which make a humming sound. These types of pickups are usually not seen today but are the choice of a few very well known artists because of the old style sound they make.

* Humbucker Pickups †This kind of pickup consists of two coils where the unwanted hum of the single coil pickup was cancelled out. In essence, the coil processes two signals: one that the music is producing and one that kills the humming noise. The actual piece that does this is called a Humbucker which was patented in 1954. The humbucker being the two coils.

* Double Coil Pickups †This type in pickups, just like their name, have two coils. But, for one reason, guitar players do enjoy the hum sound once in a while so the double coil pickup electric guitars are usually made with a switch that can take out the second coil.

There are many other factors that go into the sound an electric guitar produces. Though, pickups are the sound makers. Other parts such as: neck length, shape, material, frets, and tuners also play a part but not like the pickups. For decades, pioneers have been trying new things in hopes to finding the perfect guitar to make the best sound. Rock and roll has transformed in some ways but in other ways it has remained indifferent.
