Signs And Symptoms Of Depression: Know To Help

Depression, don’t need an introduction these days, like cold and flu it has become one disorder which is paying highly to the Psychologists. And depression is diagnosed so often especially in teenagers and people in age group of twenty five to some thirty five. This is the age period, people struggle, make money, get into relationships and they have to do so much in life. There is bound to be some pressure, some stressors and some tensions.

Feeling depressed coz of any of the above reasons at times, for a day or at the max a week is ok. Feeling sad and depressed is a normal human reaction and feelings. When there is loss of life or property, opportunity etc, when you are juggling and crossing through life’s struggle and when coz of firing from your boss there is injury to your self esteem then it’s ok to feel depressed.

But when these feelings get more intense, there is feeling of intense sadness that is individual starts to think as if he is hopeless, gone case, not worth at all, burden on earth, helpless, doomed to failure, worthless etc. When these feelings and emotions last longer, that is from days to weeks, which affects your daily life. If these feelings and emotions keep you away from functioning as you usually been doing that is normally, you being this sad and depressed is more and could be a psychological disorder of depression.

Depression can happen to anyone and circumstances and the life we people are living today well don’t need to emphasis much on it then, depression keeps lurking around the corner. You need to be aware of signs and symptoms of depression so that you know when is the time you seek help for you, your loved ones, your friends, colleagues and people you know. Signs of depressions need to be recognized, they need to be referred to a psychologists. People with symptoms of depression have known to commit suicide. Depression doesn’t mean you are crack or mad.

The DSM-IV, which is the manual for psychologists to assist them in diagnosing the psychological disorder, the signs and symptoms of depression given are as follows, in which for depression to be diagnosed, five of the symptoms of depression should be present amongst the nine symptoms of depressing given at least.

1.Feeling of depressed, this is elevated particularly in morning and lasts during most of the day.
2.Feeling of fatigue, tiredness and as if there is loss of energy which is for nearly all the days and most of all during the day.
3.Feeling worthless, guilty, hopeless, helpless, useless etc
4.Indecisiveness
5.Impaired concentration
6.Insomnia or excessive sleeping that is hypersomnia
7.Diminutive interest in any activities
8.Diminished pleasure nearly every day
9.Restlessness
10.Retardation in reactions
11.Psychomotor agitation
12.Weight loss or weight gain- any change in weight which is more or less of the five percent of the body’s weight in a month itself.
13.Suicide- recurring thoughts of killing oneself, or fearing death or wishing they could just die

Symptoms of depression makes an individual feel difficult in remembering details, pessimist, difficulty in making decisions, sleep disorders, irritability, not interested in pleasure, even sex, they live as if thee is nothing left in life anymore which will make it worth while, appetite loss or person may even over eat. A feeling of â€empty’ creeps in, he is persistently sad and anxious. Most of them have thoughts of suicide and some even commit it and may or may not get successful. Even they don’t feel well physiologically like they get tired and fatigued, have cramps and headaches, they experience aches and pains in various body parts and also this affects the digestive system and it doesn’t function normally and even after treatment it doesn’t ease.

For person to be diagnosed as depression, the signs and symptoms of depression must be present during most of the day and nearly daily for at least two weeks or nearly every day. And clinically these symptoms should be causing impairment and significant distress.

Depression is taking life, you need to be aware of this and be there to get help for the person who is feeling so helpless that he shall not ask. Depressions have the highest risk of committing suicide. If there someone you know who is feeling overwhelming sadness and this is lasting for longer period seek help before it becomes too late.
