Signs Of A Plumbing Leak

By: Phillip Anderson Home | Home-and-Family

â€Use your ears: If you hear a sound like a toilet running when no one has used it recently, there may be a plumbing leak. Listen for the continuous sound of running water.
â€Use your nose: If you smell mildew in your sink cabinets, on your floors, or in your walls, there may be a leak in these areas. Even a small amount of leaking water can cause damage.
â€Use your eyes: Look for discolored spots on your floors. These can be caused by small amounts of pooling water or moisture rising to the surface. If your floors are discolored or spongy and nothing has spilled, it's very likely that you have a leak somewhere. Keep in mind that the water could be slowly dripping from above.
â€Check your bills: Check your water bill every month. Write down the total amount and check to see if your water bill is steadily increasing. Also, take note of any dramatic increases from one month to the next. Both could be signs of a plumbing leak.
â€Check your meter: Jot down the position of the needle on your water meter and then wait a few hours without using any water. When you go back, make sure the needle hasn't budged. If it has, you might have a plumbing leak.
â€Feel your floors: A warm spot on your concrete floors can definitely indicate a leak.

No one should pay more than they have to for their water service. If you pay attention to these simple warning signs and take a few notes on your water usage, you should be able to detect a leak before it costs you too much. Once you've detected a leak, contact a local licensed plumber to have them repair it.
