Termites are not very attractive insects. So, most people wouldn't rank looking for termites very high on their list of fun activities. However, recognizing signs of termites is an important part of termite control. You need to inspect your house for two different types of termites. One type of termite is subterranean, which means that it lives underground. The other type of termite is drywood. As its name implies it lives in dry wood in homes, fencing, or dead trees. Therefore, this type of termite will be more common in dry, warmer climates. Subterranean termites often live under concrete. They like to breed and form communities in moist areas. In order to get to a wood source, the termites build mud tunnels from their breeding area to the wood. To practice pest control for these types of termites, look for the mud tunnels. The tunnels are approximately the width of a pencil. The termites themselves look somewhat like flying ants. They mate in the spring and fall. You can see them flying in swarms during these times. Drywood termites are larger than subterranean termites. Since they live in the wood itself, you will need to practice a different type of termite control. You will have to look for the evidence these pests leave behind. They leave little piles of material that look somewhat like sawdust. It is actually the waste matter that they have ejected from their living quarters inside the wood. Be aware that other insects can also push dirt and other debris into small piles as they travel along the woodwork. With either type of termite you may find the wings that they have shed. However, those wings could be from flying ants. If you notice any of the above signs, it would be a good idea to call an exterminator. The exterminator can look at the evidence and tell you conclusively whether you have a termite infestation and outline a plan for termite control. Most companies are willing to do an evaluation for free. So, if you suspect that you have a pest control issue, it is in your better interest to call and exterminator sooner rather than later. Termites eat the wood from the inside out. If you wait until they have made their way to the outside of the wood, then you will have allowed much more damage to occur than if you had treated the problem earlier.
