It has been stated that there are five basic skin types. Knowing what your skin type is represents a necessary step in choosing a skin care treatment or routine that provides your skin with everything that it needs. The type of skin that you have is genetically determined, which means you were born with it. There are five basic options when it comes to the skin type that you have so to help you determine not only what type of skin you have but to also help you build up a routine that will help keep it in the best condition read on...

Normal, oily, dry, combination, and sensitive are the five main types of skin. Although, technically, the type of skin that you have is determined by genetics, the health and beauty of your skin later in life largely depends on what you eat and how you take care of yourself. Even stress levels and any medication you are on will act as factors when it comes to the type of skin that you have. So what are the features of these five types of skin and how should you treat them?

Normal - With normal skin you will find that it has a smoother texture, is evenly toned, and has tiny pores. This type of skin has a good balance of water content and oil. To touch it will feel velvety and smooth at the same time. Also, under its translucent surface, you will notice that the skin has a healthy glow. A lot of people with this skin type are under the impression that they don't really need to do much; however, if this skin type is to last you need to take care of it. The important thing to remember is to follow a routine that involves cleansing, toning, and moisturizing.

If you do have normal skin then you should start with a gentle facial wash and cool the skin with a toner. When the toner has been absorbed into the skin, you should finish the routine with a moisturizer.

Oily - If you suffer from oily skin, you will notice that skin tends to be shiny with enlarged pores and will often be prone to blackheads and blemishes. With this skin type, however, you may also experience some tightness. If you do suffer from oily skin, then the way that you should deal with it is by starting with a facial wash. This will remove oil and dirt from your skin without taking away any of the moisture. You should also choose to use an astringent lotion on your skin and then choose a light-watery fluid as your moisturizer.

Dry - If you have dry skin, you will know how tight it can feel, especially after you have cleansed it. This is why, with this skin type, you need to use creamy cleansers in order to take away the dirt. You should aim to leave this on the site before you wipe it away using a soft cotton pad. It is important, after doing this, that you wash the skin with cold water as a way of refreshing and cleaning the skin. Lastly, you should use a thick moisturizer cream that is designed to seal in moisture. Taking care of dry skin in this way is important due to the fact that if you have dry skin you will have a tendency of fine wrinkles and flaking skin.

Combination - The reason this is called combination is because it contains both oily and dry skin. It has medium pores, a smooth texture, and healthy circulation; however, you will notice dryness on the cheeks while your T-zone is oily.

In order to combat the effects of combination skin, it is advised that you use a cream cleanser on the dry patches and a strong astringent on your T-zone and general oily area. It is, however, advised that you use a moisturizer all over your face but concentrate on the drier parts.

Sensitive skin - This skin type tends to be thin and delicate as well as feature fine pores. This type of skin flushes easy and may become irritated in certain temperatures. With sensitive skin, the best way that you can care for it is by looking for products that are hypoallergenic and scent free to stop any irritations or reactions occurring. It is also a good idea to perform a patch test with a product before you try it. You should leave the product on overnight and if there is no sign of irritation then you will know that the product will be safe to use in future.
