The skin care industry uses beauty products that increase the synthesis of the protein collagen, the main protein in skin which becomes less elastic as we age; almost 25 percent of the protein in our connective tissue and skin is actually collagen. Collagen is related to other natural substances which help to slow down the ageing process; this group is called antioxidants which are natural chemicals found in many foods and our body.It is quite normal to expect people to want to look attractive and this might explain why anti-ageing skin care products are so successful; the growth in popularity is due in no small part to the fact that we are all living and working longer. Probably the best known of these anti-oxidants is vitamin C although no-one really knows just how much we should have each day. Unfortunately all skin care treatments that use vitamin C have the problem of atmospheric oxidization to contend with once the product is exposed to the air. To get around this some skin care treatments are based on derivatives of vitamin C, which are more stable and less expensive. Unfortunately the anti-oxidant products used to replace vitamin C are not as effective but as vitamin E and lipoic acid can both have the same effect; this is not too much of a problem. Vitamin E has many functions including inhibiting the formation of cancer cells. It is found in the blood it is an antioxidant that is also used to increase the body's defenses against other diseases. Lipoic acid is found in every single human cell; it's function is to provide energy and reverse much of the damage caused to the skin by ageing. Phytochemicals form the other category of anti-ageing skin care products which are special chemicals that are extracted from plants with a variety of that are used in skin care today. A secondary but more important use of phytochemicals is the effect they have on the prevention of breast, prostate and colon cancers. Other vitamins from the B group are also used in anti-ageing skin care like vitamins B5, B6 and B12 for example. And they are having positive results. But the field of anti-ageing skin care products is vast and needs a great deal more research. There is no doubt that what has been learned so far is only a small part of the jigsaw puzzle but research is moving forward rapidly and it is only a matter of time before a new generation of products becomes available. Hopefully, these challenges will get resolved in due course and better and cheaper anti-ageing skin care products will be produced. We must not forget however, that there are many more natural methods we can all use to reduce the signs of ageing on a regular basis. Natural methods are known, but few people actually follow them; what proportion of the population actually eats healthily, takes plenty of exercise, drink sufficient water and obtain restful and regular sleep?
