Slimness Is Not A Guaranteed Ticket To Good Health

By: Gen Wright Home | Health-and-Fitness

When most people gain excess body fat, the fat is usually highly visible and we see it. But there is a type of fat that is even more dangerous and is hidden and it can make a negative impact to your health. It is internal fat that is deep in the abdomen surrounding vital organs such as the heart and liver.

Even slim people can have this fat and of 800 people scanned 45 percent of women and 60 percent of men who had normal body weight had excessive levels of internal fat. On average as people get older they gain one to two pounds of body fat each year. This may not sound much but over a decade of two it is a significant gain. Much of this fat gain is hidden by muscle tissue loss and body weight on the scales may even stay the same.

From our 30's and onwards unless maintained through proper strength building activity the human body loses muscle tissue and gains body fat. This change in body composition (muscle/fat ratio) causes the metabolism (the body's engine) to slow down and burn less fuel (calories).

The amount of toned muscle tissue you have on your body determines its energy usage - less muscle means less energy output. The extra energy not burned up in activity will be stored somewhere on the body as fat even if it is not visible to the naked eye.

We have known for many years that a person who gains fat around the middle of their body is at increased risk for heart disease, diabetes and even cancer and this used to be viewed as a risk of being overweight. Now, it is clear that even thin people are at risk and as they get older the health risks increase as body fat also moves deeper in the body.

When it comes to abdominal fat remember, there is no way to eliminate that fat by itself without taking a holistic, whole-body approach. In other words, there are no fat loss shortcuts. That whole body approach needs to combine a proper strength training program to work the entire body and support that with a sound nutritious diet full of unprocessed foods.

These two combined will speed up your metabolism and boost its fat burning capabilities. When boosted you will be burning more calories every minute of the day and night. This extra fat burning is what will whittle away at the fat both on the outside and inside of the body. Restricting your diet alone will not get rid of internal fat and hours of low intensity repetitive exercise will not get rid of it either.

It is the reduction of overall body fat percentage that prevents the spread of intra-abdominal fat. People in a two year strength training program that performed two workouts a week decreased their body fat by almost two-percent.

When you work your large muscle groups it takes energy and burning this energy results in burning fat all over the body. This type of exercise changes the hormonal and metabolic responses within the body so the type of exercise used it very important.

Proper exercise is the key to controlling levels of fat you can see and fat you cannot see and is accessible to everyone. Just get started on your very own strength training program and deal to the abdominal fat before it harms your health and well-being.
