South Dakota Auto Insurance Requirements

By: siddo Home | Finance | Insurance

Don't mess around in South Dakota! Auto insurance is required of every driver in the state, and for those who choose to violate the law, stiff penalties can result. It is never worth the risk of driving without the minimum amounts of liability coverage required in the state.

Minimum Amounts Of Insurance Needed In South Dakota

South Dakota residents planning to drive a vehicle must have a policy with the following amounts of liability insurance in place:

- $25,000 in Bodily Injury coverage for injuries sustained to one person involved in the accident
- $50,000 in Bodily Injury coverage for injuries sustained to two or more persons involved in the accident
- $25,000 in Property Damage coverage

The state also requires drivers to carry some form of uninsured motorist coverage in addition to the liability policy. An uninsured motorist policy is very valuable protection to anyone who ventures out on the roads. It will pay for damages if you are involved in an accident with a motorist who does not have the required coverage or the amount of damages sustained in the accident exceed their coverage amounts.

These are only the minimum amounts and drivers may elect to purchase higher amounts if they choose. There are also other types of policies one should consider to offer themselves a bit of protection should they be involved in an accident.

Penalties For Driving Without Insurance

It is a crime to operate a vehicle without auto insurance. If you are found to violate the law, penalties include the suspension of your driver's license, fines of up to $150, and reinstatement fees.

Proof of insurance must be kept in the vehicle at all times and provided upon request to any law enforcement officer and after an accident. It is also a crime not to have the required proof in the vehicle at all times. Store your insurance documents in a safe places inside of the car to ensure that it is never lost or misplaced in the event you should need it.

How Much Does The State Required Insurance Cost?

The amount you will pay for your South Dakota insurance will depend on several factors. The amount of coverage you are looking for will affect your rate, as well as your age, gender, marital status, type of vehicle being insured, and other factors. The average payment for insurance in the state was $131 per month in 2009. This amount reflects a driver over the age of 25 with a good driving record.
