The 10,411 seat facility first opened its doors to the public in 1980. Costing on $12 million to build, for nearly 25 years, the Sun Dome hosted both the men's and women's basketball home games. In 2005-2006, upgrades were made to the Sun Dome which included refurbishing the roof with a steel-frame geodesic dome roof that was constructed from over 3,000 beams that weighed more than 400 tons. Also a part of the upgrades were new high-definition score boards which were placed in the four corners. R. Buckminster Fuller is responsible for concept behind the geodesic dome. Fuller discovered that a triangle can withstand pressure better and is twice as strong as a triangle. Fuller also discovered that a spherical structure which is created from a triangle has unparalleled strength. The Sun Dome's architectural design was based on these discoveries by Fuller. If the South Florida Bulls can make their game as strong as their dome, they'll be in business.
