After their more recent win in the UEFA Super Cup, where they claimed the championship with a 2-0 win over FC Internazionale, Atltico Madrid managed to climg to the top of the standings of the Spanish Liga with a crushing 4-0 win over Sporting Gijn. This win gave the local team the chance to lead the Spanish championship because of the positive difference of goals the team has established in regards to their opponents. On the other hand, Sporting Gijon began its 2010-2011 season in the last spot of the standings. Atletico Madrid was far more superior in their opening game at Vicente Caldern Stadium. The Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan was one of the most outstanding players in the pitch. Sergio Agero was also a key-player for the Colchoneros success. The Argentinean striker was the responsible for the fast-paced rhythm with wich the game was been played. Aguero also created some good opportunities for his teammates to shine. Perhaps motivated by their recent success in the UEFA Super Cup, Atletic was fairly aggressive in their game strategy. They were not willing to give the slightest chance to the players from sporting to showcase their talents. The aggressive game plan quickly gave fruits for Atletico Madrid. 11 minutes into the game, Jos Jurado scored the first goal for his team. Ral Garca was the man behind the play. He completed a beautiful pass to Jurado, who without missing a beat, fired a precise shot into Juan Carlos Colinas goal. Sporting Gijon had very little to affront such a well organized and powerful offensive end. After Atletico’s first goal, the visiting team made a huge effort to defend its goal and was forced to pull back their lines. Most of the offensive end of Sporting was playing either on their own half of the field or barely making it into Atletico’s penalty box. The local keeper, David De Gea, easily controlled every little chance they took. Athletic keep been the dominant force as the first half began to progress. Both Strikers Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan paired up to create some very good plays. They were able to really put on the pressure over their opponents. The connection between these two players helped give rise to the second goal of Atletico. Aguero took away the ball from a rival, quickly ran and avoided other two defenders to shoot straight to the goal. The ball was rejected by Colinas, but retrieved by Forlan, who then shot directly into the goal. Thus the Uruguayan striker made it 2-0 in the 39th minute. After the second goal, Sporting still remained unable to bring up its game. Meanwhile De Gea was responsible for stopping without any problems the few opportunities the sporting strikers had. Then came the halftime break. In the second half, it was Atletico who really made all the difference. Forlan again came in to close in for the third goal after 63 minutes of game-time. The Local fans kept cheering for their team and they had to wait little to get yet another goal from their team. Just as the game was coming to an end, Simao, the Portuguese striker, completed Atletico’s fourth goal, right on the 90th minute.
