Split ends are one of the most common complaints that hairdressers hear with almost every person reporting some level of split ends affecting their hair. Split ends, known as also as trichoptlosis, is basically when the hair cuticles become damaged and the hair literally begins to unravel around the cortex or inner section of the hair strand. Split ends should not be left unattended. Some splits can split right up the entire hair shaft or else the split ends themselves will actually split, leaving you with split split ends. Use a clarifying shampoo about once a month...silicone builds up, which you want, because keeps the split ends "bonded" to hair so they can not be seen. Avoid vent brushes with plastic bristles. Splits ends are mainly caused due to over brushing, excessive use of hot styling tools, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays, use of cheap styling tools, coloring, perming, towel drying, brushing wet hair, elastic bands and finally lack of hair care and maintenance. If you wish to brush your hair while it's still wet, use a wide-tooth comb instead of a regular brush. If your hair's already dry, use a soft-bristled brush. Comb gently, avoiding tugging or pulling on your hair. If you encounter tangles, try to undo them with your fingers and not the comb. Also, avoid combing and brushing hair too much. Excessive brushing can cause more damage than good. Avoid plastic vent brushes. Only use all-natural bristles when you are styling dry hair and a wide-toothed comb when working with wet hair. In this way more harm is prevented. If wet is bad heat is worse. Avoid over-drying your hair with a hair dryer. Its much better to towel dry your hair than blast it with a dryer every morning. Also try to cut down on the use of straightening irons, crimps and hot curlers. Henna - Henna is a plant, which has been used for generations as a natural dye. It helps to remove dandruff and acts as a great natural conditioner. Henna is now available in power, which can be bought in shops that sell native African, Indian or Arabic products. Take about 500 g of henna powder and mix it with half a cup of lemon and 50 g of yogurt. Take some coconut milk and boil with some slices of pandanus (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.) leaf. When the oil has bubbled up, let it cool. Before retiring for the night, coat your hair with this concoction and cover it (hair) up with a towel or anything you find convenient. The next morning, shampoo your hair as usual. Try this treatment for one week for best results. Mayonnaise is a great homemade conditioner for your hair. Now you have a shiny hair with just this product. So instead of buying damage repair conditioners, try this to save some money. Trim your ends at least 6 to 8 weeks - There are some people who swear on never trimming their hair ends but this point is important. It is more important to have nice head of hair then long stringy strands of unhealthy looking hair. We all know that split ends can cause thinner hair. A split end travels from the end of the hair up the shaft to thin the hair until it eventually falls off, so it is safer to trim the end early to prevent this.
