St Louis Is A City In Missouri

By: Douglas Scott Home |

St Louis is an independent city in the US state of Missouri. It is bordered by the Mississippi River on the east and by St Louis County on the north, south and west.

The city was first established in 1764 as a trading post for the French. In later years it would become a major point of interest for Mississippi steamboats and pioneers heading west. Today, the city remains one of the most prominent in the Midwest and a popular place to visit.

Tourist attractions include the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, the Missouri History Museum, the St Louis Art Museum and the St Louis Union Station.

The Art Museum, located in the Cities premier park, Forest Park, and dating from the 1904 Worlds Fair, houses an impressive array of modern art and ancient artefacts, with an extensive collection of master works of several centuries.

The Zoo is most definitely one of the best zoos in the country. As a matter of fact, most experts say that the St Louis Zoo ranks second in the country, right after the San Diego Zoo. One thing that is unique about the Zoo is that admission is free. This is most definitely a bargain considering the hundreds of animals from all around the world.

The regions shopping malls have expanded adding new stores, destination restaurants and in mall attractions and activities. Neighbourhood shopping districts are also adding stores and shopping experiences all in walk able and pleasant surroundings. Custom made jewellery and handcrafted chocolates can be found here. Huge regional craft fairs, flea markets and art festivals are held throughout the year.

The highest concentration of bars and clubs can be found in Lacledes Landing with nightly jazz, blues, rock and reggae. Some of the outlying districts are well worth checking out in the evening these include the Loop in U City, whose bars and cafes are not just popular with students and the slightly more upmarket cafes and wine bars of Central West End. Every spring the four day Mid America Jazz Festival brings the top names together for performances all over.

A humid continental climate is experiences here. A Period of warm weather late in autumn known as Indian summer can occur roses will still be in bloom as late as November or early December in some years.

Take a trip and have a great time. A relaxing break is always called for.
