It's just now fall, and the winter holiday season is still in the future. The back-to-school routine has finally been finessed -- homework, mid-terms, sports practices, and extra-curricular activities are balanced. You are probably not even thinking about next spring, except, perhaps, when you think about your college plans. Why would clothing for the prom be a consideration, when the event is months away? Numerous prom-goers don't know that you will get the very best selection if you shop before the new year starts. Most prom dresses for the following spring begin shipping from manufacturers to stores, in October. Prom magazines that show up in December are late, considering most people have already pre-ordered the more popular prom dress styles earlier on in the year. Where are they finding these styles, if the dress magazines haven't been published? They find them online. The new styles for spring are placed on most prom dress retailers' websites during October, when the photos from the manufacturer's are available. Now, you may be thinking, "But my prom won't be until May! Surely March must be soon enough!" March is early enough for some shoppers. However, when shopping that late, you should have an open mind to the various different colors and style choices. If you want a more popular style, you will be thoroughly disappointed if you wait too long. Many of the most popular dresses will be unavailable by the end of February. Why are these no longer available? Demand for prom dresses is essentially seasonal. A certain number of dresses meant for the following spring are cut by the manufacturers in late summer and are sent to stores in October. Judging early orders, manufacturers will re-cut most popular styles through February or March. Unfortunately, by the time this happens, the stores have already taken orders for these re-cut fashions. After that, manufacturers stop making prom dresses. No one wants to have a lot of unsold inventory in their warehouse during the summer, when no one is buying prom dresses. Sometimes styles will be carried over for future homecomings, however, they are usually not available until summer or later. Because some schools also have elaborate winter formals, popular prom styles are found at these dances as well. Accordingly, these styles may be sold out or on backorder as early as February. Because prom dresses are available as early, many of them are sold for these events. In addition, major prom dress manufacturers in the U.S. sell their dresses worldwide. Additionally, a lot of retailers sell prom dresses globally. The most popular dress styles sell out quickly due to the amount of worldwide competition. It is a good idea to shop now because prom season is starting sooner in the spring calendar. Sometimes, when weather permits for certain areas of the country, proms are as early as February. Keep in mind that if your prom is in April or May, there may be others who have it earlier in the year. Some proms are even scheduled for before Christmas! Every year, we get tons of April shoppers with prom magazines in hand, wondering why the dress they saw in a magazine published in December is no longer available. Take your chances by waiting until March to buy your prom dress, if you are not picky about style or color. However, if waiting this long is not your way, or if you absolutely must have a particular style, consider purchasing as early as November or December. If you are uncertain about what you want, start looking on the internet in October and compile dress ideas for prom. As soon as you find the perfect style for you, order it!
