State Of The Data Recovery Globally

By: James Walsh Home | Computers-and-Technology | Data Recovery

Three Firms

  • Kroll Ontrack: Kroll Ontrack, which tops the chart, is the largest data recovery company, with 20 years of experience in the field. Head quartered at New York, Kroll Inc is actually a wholly-owned subsidiary of Marsh and McLennan Companies Inc. (MMC). It offers investigative, intelligence, financial, security and technology services in more than 65 cities, in over 25 countries. Kroll Ontrack is its data recovery division, and provides services from 18 locations in 11 languages worldwide. Its headquarters are at Eden Prairie, Minnesota, U.S.A.

  • Micro Com: Micro Com, founded in 1989, is a totally data recovery services firm. They deal with recovering data from RAID, tapes, DVDs, CDs, hard drives and almost all storage devices. They also take business calls directly to pass on to their specialists which is a rarity among top firms as everyone else routes it through the usual help lines and customer care services.

  • Advanced Media Engineering Ltd (AME): AME, based in the South West of England in the city of Exeter, has climbed rapidly up the charts ever since they partnered with the giant Dell. So they have the formidable Dell customer list with them now, and are selling Dell's PCs, laptops, servers etc. AME directors, Steve Westaway and Simon House, both have ten years of experience. They also boast of a team of Microsoft Certified professional services engineers. It is also a SAGE accredited reseller. They have an excellent network among the leading supplier companies, as suggested by the alliances stated above, and utilise this advantage to the hilt while serving their massive corporate customers. Recently, AME has opened a dedicated training centre at Bristol.

Specialities

At this point, we need to look at the specialities offered by these companies before going any further. It should be noted that while all companies provide almost similar range of services, they all try to put in that 'special' something that will put them apart from their rivals.

  • Kroll Ontrack has been highly publicising its 24X7X365 remote recovery services lately. The affected computer is accessed from Kroll's office itself, and the entire recovery process is managed through a remote access system. This makes the recovery process uniquely transparent and cost-effective.

  • Micro Com is a self-proclaimed hard drive recovery specialist. The chief engineer of this division has over 20 years of experience, and each engineer of the team has been trained to attain a high level of services.

  • AME specialises in providing software solutions to its customers to prevent data loss and do a better data management facilities.

The Big Ones

Apart from this, we need to mention IBM and Sungard's statistics, just to illustrate the hugeness of the revenues generated through software and processing solutions.

  • IBM has pushed in a net income of $ 9.4 billion in 2006. Its total assets are $ 103.2 billion. Number of employees on record is 355,766. Stockholders on record at the end of 2006 were 313,993. They maintain 154 resiliency centres in 55 countries, and had 15,000 recovery contracts at the end of 2006.

  • Sungard's annual revenue for 2006 exceeded $ 4 billion. It served more than 25,000 customers in 50 countries, including the 50 largest financial services providers. Sungard has launched a new Advanced Recovery Solution for business with high transactional data.

Acquisition

Most companies look out for specialist skills while aiming for a merger. A good example of this kind was Kroll Ontrack's acquisition of lbas Holding ASA, a Norway-based data recovery, secure data erasure and digital forensics services company. The acquisition was to the offer within 30 days of it being made. Ibas itself had made news through its acquisition of Vogan, the UK-based company.

Requirements for creating a Data Recovery Company:

All companies need planning, funds and research to start with, headed by an ambitious but focused individual who would be leading an expert team. Anyone thinking of starting a data recovery company would need:

A team with heavy hardware and software skills
Clean Room facilities
Heavy funding and good infrastructure
A forensics department, as an allied business service
Great networking with storage companies
Aggressive marketing, as there is intense competition
