If you've ever set foot in an exercise class, you're certainly familiar with "steady state exercise"? These are the repetitive exercise sessions that can be a tad ... boring ... at times. But there's a new craze sweeping the fitness and fat-loss worlds and it's called high intensity interval training. It's wildly popular for its fast, fast weight loss results. One kind of aerobic exercise is "steady state" which means that your tempo is fairly consistent as long as you're exercising. The majority of aerobics classes are conducted this way, as are jogging, biking, swimming or walking. Personal experience and medical science recommends this kind of exercise as an efficient way to burn fat because we need the energy to accomplish these activities and our bodies utilize fat to provide the fuel for that essential energy. To be the most efficient as possible at fat-burning, we should be moderate enough with our exercise to be able to chat with a friend, and still handle our chosen exercise for 60 minutes or so. Consistent exercise is an virtually certain way to lose weight, as many millions have discovered, to their joy. By contrast, interval training calls for strong explosions of strenous effort, followed by much more relaxed activity that permits recovery. Usually, interval training is done in 20-30 minute cycles that involve continuous running as fast as possible for 30-60 second intervals, then walking for two or three minutes to regain your equilibrium, after which time you start the cycle over again. If you wish to dramatically step-up your fat-burning, calorie-consuming mode, this kind of strenuous exercise will accomplish your goal. A shining new star in gyms and fitness programs, interval training is exploding in popularity. While many love interval training mixed into their exercise program, others don't like interval training at all. It is really an individual decision. Trainers recommend that interval training workouts should be limited to three times each week, so fitness buffs with limited time to stay in shape might wish to think about these strenuous exercise sessions. When we talk of high intensity we mean extremely strenuous! Actually, many think they might throw up at the conclusion of their interval training workout, although they rarely do so. Too strenuous? An interval training regime does not suit numerous people who think it's too radical. For those who don't want to feel nauseated - or anywhere near it - steady state exercise is the only choice. A steady state weight loss exercise routine requires some effort. An easygoing stroll through the park is exhilarating and will (hopefully) bring fresh air into your lungs - but it's unlikely remove the pounds. If you have to decide whether to incorporate interval training with your steady state exercise - or not - look at your lifestyle and personal preferences. I despise interval training because it's so stressful to my body. I strongly opt for a high-energy walk outdoors. My son, however, doesn't enoy interval training but he is faithful since the pounds simply dropped off as soon as he started high intensity interval training, and he can eat as much as he wants, yet sustain his low weight - as long as he keeps exercising.
