Stop Commuting And Work From Home

By: Clint Jhonson Home | Business | Home-Business

Commutes these days are growing ever longer. With growing populations, there are more cars on the roads and as people leave the cities for the residential suburbs surrounding them, commutes can take up to several hours each day. Some people's commutes can be three or four hours each way. There are a number of possible solutions to this problem, ranging from living in the city instead of the suburbs to car sharing, but the one this article will focus on is telecommuting. Telecommuting is a way of using technology to work from home.

A growing number of jobs now allow this, and sometimes being able to work at home is the perfect solution to commuting problems. It doesn't always work, and not all jobs can be done from the comfort of your own home, however. Many can, though; perhaps being able to work at home is the perfect solution for you.

Essentially, people who work from home handle their normal duties using their personal computer and internet connection to communicate with those at the office. It's not quite as odd as it sounds, however. With outsourcing and the rise of large companies that are spread across the globe, the people a person associates with for the work may never be met in person anyway. Much of the work of many people is now done by communicating via email with someone across the country or globe, so its not very far fetched to handle a little more communication that way as well.

Work at home jobs require a certain type of mindset, however. Since there is no distinct break between home and work life, a person may be hard pressed to know when to stop enjoying themselves and get to work. It may take a good deal of discipline to take care of some work at home that is not enjoyable, and not become diverted by chores or other tasks. Depending on the time gains from flexibility and being able to work according to a personal schedule, as well as not being required to commute every day, doing one's work from home may still be a good choice.

Of course, you cannot do all types of work from home. Some types of jobs are simply unsuitable. Jobs where regular, personal contact with a team is required, for instance, just aren't suitable for telecommuting. On the other hand, jobs like blogging, many types of freelance work, and other types of creative jobs are ideal. As long as the information required to do the job is accessible and all the other requirements can be satisfied, a person can probably do the work from home.

Over time, it will probably become possible to do a larger proportion of jobs' work at home. As internet connections become faster and more secure, and tools for communicating become stronger, this trend is likely to intensify. Tools like video conferencing, once an ability limited to large companies with satellite connections, are now in the hands of nearly anyone with a webcam and a net connection. As it becomes simpler to connect people who are far away, it will become even easier to take care of work outside of the office.
