Stop Crime In America

By: Bruce Sergeant Home |

Crime is running rampant in America. Our students are missing, children are disappearing, and families are killing one another. Here we will outline a few tips to help keep crime out of your life.

Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times. Take a few extra seconds to assess every situation. Look to see if someone is wearing a heavy coat in the middle of summer. Notice if someone or something is out of place. Make sure to always park in well lit areas. Always check around for anything suspicious in or around your car before getting in or out of it.

Be informed at all times. Listen to the news and read the paper daily. If there has been a rash of crimes committed in a certain area, you may notice this and avoid that area. Talk to friends, they may have heard something that you haven't. Check offender websites to find out if a predator has moved into your neighborhood.

Inform others of where you are going and when you expect to return. Carry a Cell Phone, and know where the nearest police department is.

Know where your children are at all times. Check on them frequently. If they are not asking you "Why are you always checking on me?" Then maybe you aren't checking enough. If your children are outside the home playing, call them in frequently. Ask them- Have you seen any strangers? Or has anyone been asking you strange questions? Check outside for unknown people hanging around your home. Or, any strange cars parked close to your home.

Always be aware of Identity theft. Check your bank account often. If you are using online banking, check it daily. Change your password frequently. Use at least one number, one letter, one capital letter, and one special character in all of your passwords if possible. Write "Require photo ID" in the signature block on the back of your credit cards. If you use the drop chute to deposit money into your account, go before it gets dark and bring someone with you.

Always ask for identification when someone comes to your door. IE: Utility repair people, cable Person. Keep doors and windows locked, even when you are at home. Ask a neighbor to watch your home if you are going to be away. Stop mail service and paper delivery. Change you outside lights when they blow out. Keeps gates closed. The sound of it opening may be enough to alert you. Keep a phone within reach in case you need to call 911. Remember, if you only have time to dial 911 put the phone down and protect yourself. Most area's can locate your address just from the call. And the operator may hear the intruder to help identify them.

These tips are in no way conclusive or meant to be the only way to protect you and your family. But with a little common sense and practice you will be much safer every day.
