Successful Strategies Of How To Sell A Used Car

By: Gen Wright Home | Automotive | Cars

When you decide that the time has come for you to sell your used car, there are a number of strategies that can help you do it successfully. Most people will sell their used car either because they are getting a more recent model used car, or even a new car, or else the car has started to need so many repairs that it is no longer considered worthwhile to keep. Regardless of the reason for selling your car, you should begin the project by consulting with the Kelley Blue Book. This will give you a fairly good idea of your cars worth.

If you used car is more than four years old, it will probably be best to sell it yourself. While you may find a dealer to buy it, they will probably only give you one quarter of its book value, as they will be planning to sell it on themselves. A car this old will probably not be eligible for a loan, either. Assuming the car is not an absolute wreck, you should make the asking price somewhat higher than what you really want, and this will give you some room to maneuver with a buyer. It is impossible to go up in price during negotiations, but easy to come down.

Before you start to advertise your used car, take some time to prepare it. You should get any mechanical problems fixed, and make sure the tires are in fairly good shape. The inside of the car should be cleaned and vacuumed. Clean out the trunk, and repair any minor defects in the car itself. Wash the car and wax it, a first impression is very important, if your car looks shiny and clean, a buyer will be easier to find.

It will simplify the process of selling your used car if you have all pertinent papers ready. Make sure you have the title and all service records on hand. It would be a good idea to make copies of the service records for you. The buyer will want to know what kind of mileage you get and will definitely check the odometer to see how many miles are on the car. These will all influence what the buyer is willing to pay for your used car.

When you go to sell your used car, you can advertise in the classified ads of local newspapers. There are often bulletin boards in libraries or grocery stores where you can post a description of your car. Word of mouth can also help, as can just putting a sign on your car and parking it near the road.

A potential buyer of a used car will often make an offer lower than what you are asking. If you made your price higher than what you really wanted, you can come down more towards what they have offered. If a ridiculously low offer is made, do not haggle, just decline the sale. Once a price has been agreed upon, unless you know the person buying the used car well, do not accept a personal check in payment. You should always hold out for cash, a money order, or a blank check. Once the car has sold, call your auto insurance company and tell them to remove the car from your policy.
