Notting Hill Carnival This two-day carnival bonanza heralds from the 60s and is led by members of London's established Caribbean population. Taking place over the last weekend of August, the streets of West London's Notting Hill are transformed into a bustling hubbub of excitement. Although the area itself has since moved beyond the poor social conditions whose residents organized the first festival in 1965, the spirit of Calypso, Steel band and Reggae music remains as cemented today as in the past. As one of Europe's largest festivals †known to attract crowds in excess of two million †travelers interested in finding hostels in London are best advised to book early, particularly if getting close to the carnival is important. For those that haven't been to the Notting Hill Carnival before (or London for that matter), it's worth becoming familiar with the carnival route. Not only will this ensure parade highlights are not missed, but it is also helps spectators avoid being boxed in one place while the procession passes. Music, dancing, food and an all-round feel good vibe ensure that the Notting Hill Carnival always delivers an unforgettable experience. Karneval der Kulturen Berlin’s a pretty lively city at the best of times, but it really outdoes itself when the Karneval der Kulturen or Carnival of Cultures comes bouncing into town. The event was established in 1996 to celebrate the huge variety of cultural influences that have come to define the German capital. Modern hip-hop blends seamlessly with Caribbean Soca and European music and fashion influences in a celebration that leaves little cultural heritage unexplored. With performers dancing around the street in their thousands, and various troupes daubed in make-up and dressed in extravagant costume, this celebration promises sounds and sights in equal measure. Lasting for four days, there is little option for the hardcore partygoers determined to see out the event to its conclusion than to seek out Berlin hostels located along the route. It’s worth being aware however, that the carnival itself is divided up into two sections, with a smaller Children's Carnival specifically aimed at families. The respective routes could, in turn, determine where it is best for attendees to stay.
