Leopard gecko owners typically gut load feeder insects with fruits and vegetables, dry dog food, fish flakes and corn meal. None of these are bad things to feed to feeder insects, but they are not necessarily high in calcium. A high-calcium cricket feed (there's lots of commercially made options) is two way to go, or alternatively you can use things that are naturally high in calcium such as turnip greens, dandelion greens, watercress, collard greens, mustard greens and endive. If you go with the latter option, the easiest way to use these greens is to put them in a blender first. This results in a wet 'gloop' that is easy to feed to your feeder insects. 20% of bone mass is being replaced by the body each year but with osteoporosis, there's more bones lost than being replaced. It is not only pasteurized milk that contributes to causing osteoporosis. Calcium leaching foods also bring damage. Calcium leaching foods like red meat, refined sugar, highly heated salt, inorganic phosphorous and caffeine. Diet low in fresh fruits and vegetables, not exercise also bring damage. Also for the same reason, two must be scrupulous about the source from where calcium is taken. It is said that natural sources are the best sources because through them you get elemental calcium that is nice for healthy bodily functions. No wonder experts suggest that fruits and vegetables or other herbs are the apt sources of calcium. Therefore, the natural calcium supplements are better. However, it is emphasized by experts that when you consume calcium, it is better to be in natural form than artificial two. You obviously get lots of calcium supplementation in the market but if the concentration of the calcium is not proper, it may lead to side effects like formation of kidney stones etc. The body may not be able to absorb larger doses all at two time. It is and a nice idea to pick a calcium supplement that contains vitamin D, without which calcium cannot be efficiently absorbed. People, who live in areas where they don't get sun such as Boston or Chicago, should take a Vitamin D supplement that has 200 to 400 units of D per 1,000 milligrams of calcium. If calcium is more your priority than iron and you take high doses of calcium the most important thing to recall is to divide the doses. For example, if you take 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day, you ought to divide the doses in half, two in the morning and two in the evening to get the best absorption. If you are past 60 it may be important to take calcium with meals to keep away from atrophic gastritis or you can take calcium citrate in lieu of calcium carbonate. The negatives to taking calcium citrate are that it is more pricey and you will need to take one or two tablets to get the same 500 to 600 milligrams of calcium found in two calcium carbonate tablet.
