Sylvester the cat started life as an unnamed, lisping black and white cat originally devised by Friz Freleng around 1945, although it was to be Bob Clampett who eventually pitted him against Tweety Bird, his own creation from 1942. Leaving the studio before the project could be completed it was Freleng who would mould the pairing into one of the most successful screen partnerships there has been. The cartoon short 'Tweetie Pie' debuted in 1947 and earned Warner Bro. an Academy Award for Best Short Subject (Cartoons). Today both Tweety Bird, who went on to become Tweety Pie or more simply Tweety, and the unnamed black and white act with a lisp who went on to become Sylvester are two of the most easily recognised cartoon characters on screen. Not only on screen, in 1951 Mel Blanc, who voiced Tweety Pie had a hit with the song 'I Taut I Taw A Puddy Tat' which he recorded with Billy May's orchestra. And I bet you knew the topic of this article simply by reading the title, that's how ingrained into our society these characters have become. Most of their plotlines followed the same theme; cat chases bird, bird outwits cat normally by involving the other characters namely Gandma and Hector the bulldog. Sylvester's schemes to seize the prize and eat him, although not quite as elaborate and involved as a certain Coyote we know are however equally doomed to failure. For those who love these characters and want to include them in a party theme there are lots of ways of doing so; Invitations: there are plenty of printed invitations available which depict these loveable Looney Tune cartoon characters. Better though would be to make your own based on your favourite Sylvester or Tweety Pie picture. Make sure you get your invitations out early and let your guests know the party theme at the same time and share with them any costume suggestions you may have...... Fancy dress: there are many Looney Tunes fancy dress costumes readily available either at your local fancy dress store or from the internet. Warner Bros. have issued licences for Sylvester the Cat, Tweety Pie and Bugs Bunny in adult and children's sizes so looking close to the real deal is easier than ever. Face Painting: why not paint your guest's faces with their favourite Looney Tunes character. If you don't feel confident in doing the painting yourself, you could hire a face painter for the afternoon. Party games: why not change some of the best known, and therefore still everyone's favourite party games, into something more suited to your own party theme..? For example; you could alter the game Hot potato where guests sit in a circle and a potato is passed from guest to guest and one person is nominated to shout 'Hot Potato' whenever they feel like it with the person holding the potato at that time leaving the game, by replacing the potato with a stuffed Tweety Bird or Sylvester the Cat. Remember, this game works best when the 'shouter' cannot see who is holding the potato otherwise a degree of cheating may take place! Lastly, if you have had a fancy dress party, don't forget to let your guests know you appreciated their efforts with their costumes.
