System Restore feature is used to recover the system by creating snapshots, or restore points of the computer at various intervals or before installation of certain task. By using this feature, one can restore the computer to a previously known working state. This saves considerable time and money compared to reinstalling of applications and operating system. The feature saves spreadsheets, documents, images, and music as it affects Windows Registry, programs, and system files. When compared with file filter driver as a system restore in Windows XP, the Microsoft Windows Vista brings the shadow copy feature which is an improved interface for restoring the snapshots. This feature of Vista allows recovery from greater range of changes than in Windows XP. The advantage of using Shadow Copy is that block-level changes are done in files and it is located in directory where the volume can be monitored. Some of the major issues in Windows Vista are caused by problems of Windows Registry, device drivers, and DLL files. When restore point is created, a current copy of these files are saved which have been restored using the feature System Restore Vista. Importantly, restoration of system is not intended for backing up personal files, so you cannot recover a personal file that has been deleted or damaged. In Windows Vista, a shadow copy of a file or folder is created when a restore point is requested. To define a shadow copy, it is essentially a previous version of the file or folder at a specific point. The best part is that Vista can request restore points automatically or when asked. In the case of system restoration, files and settings are copied from the shadow copy to the live volume which is used by Windows Vista. This enhances system integration with other aspects of backup and recovery. This system restore feature is automatically enabled in the Microsoft Windows Vista. Depending upon the need, one can enable or disable the feature by using the System Protection tab on the System Properties control panel. By default, the space reserved for Windows Vista system restore is 15% of the volume's size. Therefore, shadow copy feature will also not run on disks smaller than 1 GB or on disk that is not formatted with the NTFS file system.
