Taking Care Of Your Teeth

By: Parimal Patel Home | Health-and-Fitness | Dental

Without teeth we wouldn't be able to chew our food, talk properly or smile; yet for many of us our magnificent molars - an incisors and canines-remains a taken for-granted mystery.
Teeth are made of several different tissues - anamel, the hardest tissue in the body but prone to fracture; dentine ,slightly porous and sensitive to hot, cold and sweet foods; and pulp, where the blood vessels and nerves of the tooth are found.
When humans are born, they do not need teeth immediately as milk provides all the nutrients for growing. As babies begin to eat solid food and need to chew, the primary or baby teeth erupt in growth.
From about six, human faces grow significantly - the secondary or adult teeth then erupt to fit the bigger space and height. For each baby tooth, there is an adult tooth underneath so it is important that these are kept healthy.
When baby teeth decay or are lost early, crowding can occur.
We have 20 primary teeth and 32 adult teeth - incisors, canines, premolars, and molars, each with a different function.
Teeth decay when the bacteria in the mouth produce acid, dissolving tooth enamel. Bacteria make acid each time we consume carbohydrates and sugars.
Food and drinks with very high risk if they are used every day are cordials, fruit juice, sports drinks, fizzy drinks, cakes, confectionery and dried fruits.
To prevent tooth decay the best thing to do is GIVE TEETH A REST.
Teeth need time to heal from acid attack in between eating and drinking. The saliva in our mouths is filled with calcium and phosphate to protect our
teeth so if we allow time for it to work our teeth are less likely to decay.
Dairy food also protects our teeth. Other things we can do are to brush with fluoride toothpaste, and floss our teeth regularly.
Everyone has different needs and dentists these days will advise how often you should have a check up.
