Tenerife (canary Islands)

Overview

There are seven islands which constitute the Canary Islands in Spain and Tenerife Island is the largest among them. The population here is about 900,000. Every year 5 million tourists come to Tenerife Island and this resort island is quite busy. This island has two airports. One of the world’s largest carnivals is held in Tenerife and it is the financial capital of Canary Islands.

The capital of Tenerife is Santa Cruz de Tenerife which is also the Island council’s seat. The city in conjunction with Las Palmas is the capital for the autonomous community in Canary Islands and they share governmental institutions †Presidency as well as ministries.

San Fernando de La Laguna University was founded in the year 1792 and is located in Tenerife. This university is the oldest in the Canary Islands. The second major city on this island is San Cristbal de La Laguna which is a World Heritage Site.

Tenerife Island is a volcanic creation building up from the floor of the ocean since 20-50 million years.

Climate

The average temperatures in a year are as follows:

Maximum †24 C in the months of July-August
Minimum †14 C in January-February

Art and Culture

1.'La Recova' Arts Center †is an important center for culture. Exhibitions for art are conducted in this place. It also houses The City School of Graphic Arts.
2.Natural and Human History Museums †this is an important project where all the dispersed collections are brought under one roof.

Cuisine

The cuisine of the Tenerife Island is influenced by the recipes from Spain, Africa and Latin America and hence is a combination of these three. Delicious dishes and feasts are very common in Tenerife. Popular dishes are - Wrinkled potatoes, salted fish soaked in a Mojo sauce and hot chick pea stew. It is possible to get well prepared tapas all over the island.

Sports and Entertainment

The tourists can enjoy their stay in Tenerife by doing the following:

1.Spend more time on golden sandy beaches
2.Explore the flora and fauna available abundantly on this island
3.Go to various beautiful parks †Anaga, Teide, Teno rural park and Caorono Forestal Natura park
4.See the landscape at the teide volcano base

Because of the environment on this island, the Hollywood blockbuster †One million years BC †was filmed on this island in 1970s.


Nightlife is available in abundance and tourists can entertain themselves by going to such places. Theme parks, cinemas, exhibition halls and museums are available and you can go for these activities.


Business and Economy

The economy of Tenerife is mainly centered on the service sector which accounts for 78% of the total production capacity. However, it has not undermined the importance of other sectors †primary, energy, Industries and construction.
