The website is very professional looking, the sales copy (the pitch) is very convincing. And they promise traffic by the hoards and a top 10 position in Google in 7 to 14 days. If you are like any other future internet overnight millionaire you went out and built or had someone build you a website, lined up your product or service, put together your pitch for the thousands of visitors that you expect to start over running your website and casting their money at you just as fast as you can catch it.. You get all of the details taken care of and the launch day has arrived and you go LIVE and nothing happens. Not 1 visitor in the first week. You are a patient person so you wait a second week and still, Nothing, not 1 visitor besides Momma and a few friends. You now realize that the internet is just like any other business and that you need traffic and that is done through advertising. The next thing you do is look into the different forms of internet advertising and start reading the hundreds of thousands of ads on the internet promising massive traffic. The problem is that there seems to be thousands of different ways to advertise on the internet. As you do your research you start to see a pattern. The prominent ads are broken down into about 4 different areas. Natural search engine traffic, Pay per click, Paid ads on high traffic sites, and the email campaign (ezine list ads) You decide that natural search results are the way to go because you ran across ads that says you can have your website in the top 10 of Google for only #39.95 per month and this seems much cheaper than the alternatives. You find a site with one of these ads and sign up. A week or 2 goes by and nothing. You wait a few more more weeks because you had heard through the grapevine that it may take a few months so you figure patience is a virtue. 3 months go by and the only traffic you have seen is your hard earned money going down the road, Never to return. Chances are you bought search engine submission services and they do nothing that you can not do in 15 minuets manually. They promise to submit to over 500 search engines and that you will get top 10 in Google in 2 weeks or less. Let me now show you the scam. Here we go. Google gets about 60% of search traffic, Yahoo about 25% and MSN has about 10 %. This accounts for 95 % of search traffic. So how important are the other 497 search engines that they submit your site too? This is the second part of the scam. They promise top 10 in Google in 2 weeks or less. This is easy because they do not tell you what word or phrase that you will get a top 10 position with. I can assure you that it is not a keyword that will give you any traffic. You will rank top 10 for your websites URL. Nothing else and you do not need help for that, the search engines will do that anyway. Let me make 1 thing very clear to future internet marketers. The internet is not a magical playground where everyone gets rich with little or no effort. It is a business just like a brick and mortar business and it must be built just like a conventional business. You have to do your homework, Invest a lot of work and plan for long range goals. Internet advertising is just like any other media. It takes planning and then an investment in either sweat or money. There are no shortcuts and no yellow brick road. Study and practice on a consistent basis will pay off, It is not rocket science, Just basic Business principles.
