The Authenticity Of Online Auctions

By: Robert Alfred Home | Internet-and-Business | Auctions

From the comfort of your home, just a few clicks of the mouse away there are laptops, iPads, iPhones, jewelries, gift cards, antiques, HDTV, cameras, movie DVDs, designer dresses, and just about anything up for grabs. That’s online auction. It’s not just the convenience factor to which the success of these auctions can be attributed to. There’s a cost factor as well. Better bargains are offered in them.

However, it’s not wise to take the promises of the online auctions at face value. Many-a-time you may discover a hidden cost or end up paying more. Then there’s the authenticity part. You need to assess how much you are protected by the online site admin. It’s not rare that items didn’t reach buyers even though they had paid for the same. Sellers on a few auction sites that offer selling option had met with the same fate as well: they didn’t get their money despite having shipped the product.

A little bit of caution can prevent you from being duped by dubious online auctions. As a rule of thumb never settle for anything ambiguous before deciding to bid for products, and of course go by reputation of the site. Genuine auction sites adhere to certain norms. There will be a clear guideline for buying or selling. Most of your questions will be answered in FAQ or the Help section of the sites only, but any extra question will be promptly replied to. There should be a dos-and-don’t or a strategy section advising you on successful bidding.

The reputable online auctions will state the protection they offer you, and how they administer exigencies arising from non-receipt of products or payments, or receipt of a different or out-of-order products and the like. These are rare incidents on reputable sites but there should be preparedness for them nevertheless.

Authentic online auctions have a reputed payment gateway like PayPal. Another very important thing to consider is the economics of the auction site. Why? Coz this tells you if the site is showing undue magnanimity to its visitors at the cost of its future existence, or if it has a comprehensive business model that offers you a fair deal but allows itself a handsome profit for its sustenance as well. Also know clearly what you are bidding on. The product descriptions should be crystal clear.

Some online auctions are penny auctions. The very economics of these auctions make grabbing brand new items at 90% off retail prices a regular thing. Bidding starts at zero for every item and each bid raises the price of the item by a penny and adds some seconds to the timer. Bidders have to buy bid packs in order to bid. Bids cost about half a penny each. The last bid when the timer counts down to zero is the winning bid.

Some penny auctions offer profitable opportunities to sellers as well. Normally a percentage of cash collected from every bid placed on the item being sold goes to the seller, which may amount to staggering sums of money.
