The Battle For Space

By: Catalin Ioan Radulescu Home | Home-and-Family

Not all of us have a house big enough. Even if, at a moment, the living space is big enough, it can appear situations (like a new born child or coming of some guests) when the living space may become insufficient. How we can handle this situations ? With a battle for space ! Of course, a peaceful battle, in which the design of the different component of the house is very important. If we bough a ready made house we can contribute at the living space growth by a well design of the furniture and by order preserving

How we can choose the adequate furniture to gain space ? First of all we must exactly know what utility we want to have for some space, and depending of that, what furniture we choose or design. The best way to organize the living space is by using made to order furniture. So ,the furniture will have the convenient dimensions, which we have designed, for some place.

At the first sight, this option appears to be more expensive, but, if we design the components of the furniture and we combine them by ourselves, this option will be the most convenient. If we want to use ready made furniture, we must measure the place in which we want to put it and choose the furniture with the dimensions closer to optimal dimensions for that place.

The optimal use of the living space can be made using the principles below :using the space on vertical and using the pliable or inflatable objects.

Using the vertical space can be done using wardrobes or shelves with their height closer to the ceiling height. Being higher, this furniture pieces may be narrower. For the arrangement of the clothes in such a narrow wardrobe, the hangers will be parallel with the wall. Also , even this furniture pieces are sitting on the floor, they must be attached to the wall, for safety.

Another modality to gain space is by using bunk beds. These may be simple or even double bunk beds ( two persons down and two on the top bunk-a double bunk bed I didn't see in any store yet ).At this kind of beds we must keep in mind that the bed above must be at a convenient height, so who stands "downstairs" to be not in danger to hit his head at the top and also, for security, the bed above must have solid guardrails. It is not recommended (or even it should not be allowed ) the access of the children under 6 years on the top bunk , to avoid accidents.

Into the category of pliable objects there are pliable tables and chairs. We can design or assemble these by ourselves, eventual by studying already made objects. For a better transportability, the folding tables may have wheels. In the category of pliable objects we can include extensible sofas and benches which have the piece where we are sitting as folding piece , also functioning as a cover for a crate.

The category of inflatable objects includes inflatable sofas and armchairs.

Using these methods to conquer space we must also consider the aesthetic aspects, to achieve an optimal combination between utility and pleasant.

Keeping order is also very important, because it's obvious that a room in mess has less available space.
