If you are moving into a new home or redecorating your current home, you may be pondering what to do about your windows. Curtains or blinds? The choice can be difficult. Some people like the look of curtains, but blinds actually have a number of significant advantages. 1. Allergen reduction. If you have someone with allergies in your home, you should avoid curtains. Common allergens like dust mites and animal dander can get trapped in curtains and are difficult to get out. This is especially crucial when the person's allergens are linked to a serious condition like asthma. 2. Ease of cleaning. To clean curtains, you will need to completely pull them down and run them through the washing machine. Often, they can't go through the drier so you will have curtains draped all over your home as you try to get them dry without ruining them. This is a major hassle. Cleaning blinds is easy. A quick swipe with a damp rag or a duster is usually all it takes to get them clean. 3. Durability. If you have a pet, this is a major consideration. Cats and dogs can be devastating to curtains. They can get tangled or may decide to go after them with teeth and claws. Curtains can be quickly shredded to pieces and will need to be replaced. Pets will have a harder time damaging window blinds and, in the case of verticals, if a single blade gets damaged it can be easily and cheaply replaced. 4. Modern appearance. Curtains can look really dated. If you want your home to have a cleaner, more modern appearance, go with window blinds. They provide a minimalistic look that is tidy and attractive. 5. Light. Curtains block a lot of light, even when they are drawn back. If you want your home to look lighter and more open, window blinds are a much better choice. When they are closed tight, they keep out the light just as well as curtains, but when open or pulled back, the room will be much brighter. 6. Ease of use. Curtains can be a real hassle. Whether you are trying to open or close them, it can be a difficult job. They are also unwieldy for kids to manage. With window blinds, all it takes is a turn and a flick of the wrist and they are open or closed, drawn across or pulled back, whichever you prefer. Even the largest set of verticals is simple to manoeuvre. 7. Air quality. Planning on cooking anything in your home? If you are considering curtains, you should know that every odour will get absorbed in the fabric. The next time you draw your curtains shut, do you really want to smell last Tuesday's cod dinner? The plastic of window blinds will not absorb odours and your home will always smell fresh and clean.
