We all have different ideas about what makes a great summer holiday, but a lot of people will be dreaming about long, sandy beaches, cool breezes and endless summer sun to enjoy on their next holiday abroad. One of the best locations in the world for its choice of great beaches has to be the island of Gran Canaria. One of the best known of the Canary Islands, many holidaymakers are lured into going back again and again once they have seen how sensational the beaches actually are. Seasoned visitors will know that the resort of Maspalomas has one of the most impressive beaches on the island. If you don’t like being shoulder to shoulder with other holidaymakers then the resort’s much loved sand dunes will provide a haven for you and your family to enjoy during your stay. Gran Canaria’s beaches are also reminiscent of those perfect beaches you see in films and on television. You won’t have to walk far to find the ideal place to sunbathe, since the most popular beaches are immaculate and free from rocks and stones. If you are taking the kids with you then you’ll be delighted by the quality of Maspalomas as a great place for all the family to stay. But the island is also known for its wide variety of beaches. If you want a more sheltered beach without the crashing waves that are commonplace in more exposed locations, then go for the beach at Playa de las Canteras, with a reef known as La Barras to protect you from the waves. The children will also love the much smaller beach and resort of Puerto de Mogan, which also features a fishing port. Playa de los Amadores, meanwhile, is a man made beach which nonetheless offers a stunning view and a calm, protected sea to swim in. It also tends to be rather quieter than some of Gran Canaria’s other beach locations. Choosing where to stay on an island that has so much to offer is understandably tricky, although the best locations are all on the southern edge of the island †along with the most famous beaches. There are plenty of Gran Canaria hotels to choose from, offering some wonderful facilities to enjoy during your holiday. Some will offer full board options, which can be ideal if you have children as they can often be more cost effective. But if you are going to be at the beach every day then you won’t necessarily be able to take advantage of the lunch options, so it’s worth checking how far the beach is from your hotel. Wherever you choose to stay and whatever beaches you choose to enjoy while you are there, you can be sure that Gran Canaria will tempt you back over and over again.
