I’m sure you’ve heard about social media by now, you may have even heard that it’s the next big thing. But what is it really all about? People have progressed from standard and simple to complex. Take the ice cream for example. At first there were probably three main ice creams, most likely to be chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. However as time went on, people experimented with different flavours including pecan, toffee and honey flavours. There are a lot more but some became popular than others. So after all these flavours being made, how are we as consumers supposed to make a decision upon which one to have? This is where social media comes in, because of the wide variety people are able to describe each in their own liking/disliking, rate each one and comment. People loved this as they were saved from making the wrong decision. People are now able to connect and share thoughts, likes and dislikes, and general things that interest them. Now how do ice cream makers around the world benefit from this? Simple, they read the reviews and ratings and improved their flavours due to the reviews and ratings. The best thing about this was the buzz behind all of this, so many people participate to give their point of view whereby ice cream makers saw this information priceless. After the ice cream flavours were improved, the customers were made aware and commented and rated the flavours again. Ice cream makers found this medium a new, cost-effective and easy way to work with customers and in the long run keeps them happy. This created a unique community of ice cream lovers. Whether you’re a big established company, an individual with limited loyal customers, or someone with ideas and opinions, social media helps you create new opportunities online with free tools such as blogs, podcasts videos, social bookmarking and social networking. This helps build a community of people who care about the same things and help businesses improve their products and services.
