The Changes You Can Expect From Taking Singing Lessons

By: Rick Martin Home | Arts-and-Entertainment | Music

The decision of taking singing lessons is very important for most people. The ones who decide that it is in their best interest to do this are starting off on the right foot. If you follow proper training, your voice will be stronger, healthier, and will continue to improve long after you stop taking voice lessons on a regular basis. As unique individuals, everyone reacts differently to the process. While some people need time to adjust, others have no problem right from the start.

Everybody has a hard time at the start of something. You're new to the process, your confidence is low and other problems like that. Voice lessons are no exception. The first three months are the most challenging. It is in that period when you will suffer the most vocal changes. The technique you have developed may be poor, your voice can be damaged due to improper training and you may not have a clue about your true potential. Your confidence may be either too low or too high. Other problems that may occur during this period are a tired voice due to singing, you may lack the power, range and may be sometimes unable to hit certain high notes.

Putting aside old ideas for new ones is a difficult task. All the new information offered by singing lessons may be difficult to absorb. Given the fact that you are a student, it often happens you may rush into things and push yourself too hard, because of the desire for quick progress. Some may stop taking singing lessons before any real improvements are made. If you are not a quitter, than this stage is beneficial for you, even though it may not seem like it at that time. You can overcome this difficult period with patience and practice. It is also a time that brings out the best in you and helps you know your strengths and weaknesses. By discovering them, you will know how to overcome them and therefore eliminate your current limitations.

Once the critical three months period is over, you have overcome the beginner stage. The voice lessons program must move on. The next six months are the ones when the greatest progress is made. You have settled in, learned the basics and made the commitment. You old bad habits are being replaced by new good ones. The proper technique has reached an automatic stage and you are now connected to music on a creative level as well. Your improvement is noticed by family and friends and positive comments are coming your way, boosting your confidence. You feel like your boundaries can be stretched even further and old ideas are left behind.

The last three months of the first year mark the advanced period. Now you can use the proper vocal technique and sing from bottom to the top without effort. Significant improvements are noticeable and your voice is stronger and louder. You can now reach the desired pitch and high notes. Your stamina has also increased and the effort you put into your singing is minimal. You achieve independence and you can monitor yourself when you are practicing, reducing the frequency of the voice lessons.

It takes about one year to reach your true potential. Once you have completed the singing lessons, you should be careful not to fall back into old habits. Because of this, periodic training sessions should be taken. They can help prevent the creation of new bad habits or switching back to old ones. Due to the fact that singers cannot hear how their voice really sounds like, these sessions are necessary.

A CD guide speeds up the learning process. The exercises offered by them vary. Some of them are intended to activate some qualities in your voice, while others are designed to deactivate some unwanted features. One such product can be found online at squidoo.com.
