The Dalmatian Is A Fine Dog Breed

By: Home |

The Dalmatian is probably one of the most recognizable dog breeds there are, easily distinguished by its striking black-spotted pattern design. However, the origin of this interesting color pattern is still unknown. The Dalmatians name, comes from a region in western Yugoslavia known as Dalmatia. The Dalmatian was first recognized by the American Kennel Club way back in 1888 and is still pretty popular today.

Dalmatians are high energy dogs and have great enthusiasm for running and can easily do so for long distances. Training this dog takes great patience and a lot of obedience training as well. They also need plenty of room to run around in so a fenced in yard is a definite plus to keep your dog safe. The Dalmatian can be a little aggressive towards other animals, especially dogs that it does not know, but it is known to be quite gentle with other pets, such as cats and even horses.

Although this dog breed makes an excellent house pet, it can be a little stubborn when it comes to training. Keep in mind that this dog breed may also be a little too energetic if you have several small children in the house. However, as with any dog breed, given thorough training and adequate exercise, the Dalmatian can make an exceptional family pet.

Upkeep And Maintenance

Upkeep of this high energy dog does take a bit of an active lifestyle on the owner's part and they do best in a very active family. Be forewarned that a Dalmatian will not be happy with just a few walks - they need exercise. And a lot of it! He is made to run and needs to be able to run long distances outdoors. In fact, if you're a jogger you couldn't get a more compatible jogging partner. Just remember to keep him in a safe area whenever the dog is off leash.

These dogs do better if they have the luxury of living indoors but also have the flexibility of being able to run outside whenever it is necessary. Dalmatians don't tolerate hot temperatures very well so if he is kept outside be sure to have plenty of cool shaded areas and soft bedding for him to relax in when necessary. Companionship should be a top priority if you plan on owning a Dalmatian.

Health Information

A very common health issue with the Dalmatian, unfortunately, is deafness. Minor concerns for this dog breed include allergies, seizures, hypothyroidism and iris sphincter dysplasia. Veterinarians also recommend that you have this dog specifically tested for eye problems, hip dysplasia, thyroid, and potential hearing loss issues.

Overall, Dalmatians tend to have long life spans, ranging somewhere between 12 and 15 years, and maybe even longer. So, if you plan on owning a Dalmatian, companionship should be a top priority. Remember that they are a high energy, long lived and fun loving breed. If these qualities match your lifestyle then the lovable Dalmatian could be the dog breed for you.
