What principles should the Diabetic Nephropathy patients obey? The morbidity of Renal Failure is big enough without a good control of the illness condition (If Diabetic Nephropathy is in poor control, Renal Insufficiency will easily occur/ the incidence of RI will become very high.). We can’t treat Diabetic Nephropathy only with the controlling of illness condition. The more important thing is to reduce the high blood sugar and prevent kidney from damaging (For Diabetic Nephropathy patients, they should not only put illness situations under good control but also reduce the high blood sugar and avoid renal impairments) . Therefore, it is very important to have a reasonable/proper/healthy/scientific diet for the patients with DN. The principles which patients with DN should obey are as follows. 1. Control the protein’ intake. The long time high-protein diets will enhance (worsen/aggravate) the high filtration state of kidney. At the same time, it will increase the production and retention of toxic substances in the body, thus leading to a further damage for kidney. In general, we suggest that you (patients) should take protein according to the standard of 0.6g per kilogram of body weight every day and improve the proportion of high-quality protein in a limited range (to a limited extent or degree). Patients can take part of wheat starch, instead of rice and flour, as the source of energy. 2. Reduce the intake of fat and salt. Diabetic Nephropathy is always companied with Lipodystrophy, so patients should still insist on taking low-protein diets/foods. There is plenty of Monounsaturated Fatty Acids which can be the source of energy in Olive oil and Peanut oil. When the Diabetic Nephropathy develops to a certain stage, High Blood Pressure Hypertension will appear with the symptoms of Edema or decreased urine. Restricting the intake of salt can effectively prevent the development of complications. 3. When you go on a low protein diet, the energy supply must be sufficient so that to for maintaining the normal physiological life. You can choose some staple foods with high energy and low protein, like potatoes, lotus root starch, bean vermicelli, taro, sweet potatoes, yams, pumpkin, and water caltrop starch, water-chestnut and so on. We must make the total heat standard/normal. If the Diabetic Nephropathy patients follow the above diet guides, the development of the disease will be put off. On the basis of proper diets, patients can receive/apply/use the Stem Cell Therapy to treat the disease. Stem cells have the ability of differentiation. They can not only repair the damaged kidney but also rebuild the renal function. This therapy will treat the Diabetes Nephropathy fundamentally and prevent the aggravation of the illness. Generally speaking, the diet for the Diabetic Nephropathic patients is very complicated. We should both ensure the sufficiency of the calorie and nutrition and properly limit the intake of carbohydrate, saturated fat and protein. But if the patients don't eat anything for a long term, the malnutrition will make the body more weak, unable to fight diseases ,and a worse prognosis. Long-term intake of high protein will aggravate the high filtration of the kidney and increase the production and retention of the internal toxin then lead to the further damage to the kidney function. Generally it is advised that the intake of protein in the daily diet is 0.6g/kg and enhance the intake of the proportion of high quality protein. When it develops into the Uremia stage, the intake of protein should be restricted more strictly. With the low protein supplied, the calorie in the diet should maintain the normal physiological need. Some staple food with high calorie but low protein are prefered, like potatoes, lotus root starch, vermicelli, taro, Chinese sweet-potato, yam, pumpkin, water caltrop starch, water chestnut starch, etc, to achieve the standard range of the total calorie in the diet. Reduce the intake of fat and salt. Lipodystrophy always accompanies with Diabetic Nephropathy, so less intake of fat should also be persisted. Olive oil, peanut oil contain the plenty of unsaturated fatty acid whicn can be the source of energy. The relevant expert reminds: the diet of the Diabetic Nephropathic patient should be changed with the actual condition of the patient. The patients themselves should know more information about the principle of the diet and then make diet plans according to the professional expert’s advice.
